Owen Cardinal McCann (born June 29, 1907 in Woodstock, Cape Town , South Africa , † March 26, 1994 in Cape Town ) was Archbishop of Cape Town .

Life

Owen McCann studied in Cape Town and Rome the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology and received on 21 December 1935, the priestly ordination ; then he was released for further studies. From 1940 to 1948 he worked as editor of the magazine "The Southern Cross" and as a community chaplain. From 1948 to 1950 he was a pastor in Cape Town before Pope Pius XII. on March 12, 1950 appointed Titular Bishop of Stectorium and appointed Vicar Apostolic of Cape Town. The episcopal ordination donated to him on May 18, 1950 Archbishop Martin Lucas SVD , Apostolic Delegate in South Africa. Co- consecrators were John Colburn Garner , Titular Bishop of Tracula and Vicar Apostolic of Pretoria , and Bernard Cornelius O'Riley , Titular Bishop of Phoba and Emeritus Vicar Apostolic of the Western Cape of Good Hope

In 1951, Owen McCann was named the first Archbishop of Cape Town. From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council . Pope Paul VI accepted him in 1965 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Prassede in the cardinals college.

Owen McCann headed the South African Bishops' Conference for many years and was head of the Archdiocese of Cape Town until 1984.

He died on March 26, 1994 in Cape Town and was buried in the local cathedral .
