history

This light vehicle was used in the Red Army from 1942 for reconnaissance and communication purposes. It is based on the chassis of the light off-road vehicle GAZ-64 , the structure of the armor was strongly influenced by the light reconnaissance tank of the Wehrmacht . There were versions with and without radios, as well as a version with a 12.7 mm DSchK machine gun. Sometimes anti-tank rifles or captured 2 cm automatic cannons were installed in the field . A variant that could run on rails ( BA-64ZhD ) was also created to control railways . A total of 3901 BA-64 and 5209 of the improved BA-64B were manufactured from 1942 to 1946.

Individual captured vehicles were used under the designation BA-64 (r) by the Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS and Ordnungspolizei . In order to prevent them from being attacked by their own or allied troops, they were marked with oversized crosses .

The BA-64B version of the vehicles was also used in the barracked People's Police .
