Paolo Pellegrin (born March 11, 1964 in Rome ) is an Italian photographer .

Life

Pellegrin graduated from the Institute of Photography in Rome. In the early 1990s he went to Paris and in the following years worked as a photo journalist for various international publications. In 1995 he received his first World Press Photo award for his recordings of AIDS in Uganda . In 2000 he received a grant from the Hasselblad Foundation. To date, Pellegrin has won the World Press Photo Award ten times.

He became a Magnum Photos Associate in 2001 and a full member in 2005. Pellegrin also has close links with Newsweek magazine . In particular, his work in the context of war reporting made him known, for example, he was deployed during the Kosovo War in 1999, the Darfur conflict in 2004 and the Lebanon War in 2006, in which he himself narrowly escaped death from rocket fire. Although his pictures are primarily concerned with war, he also focuses on people's hatred, suffering and grief. He himself sees his role in "creating records for our collective memory". Despite the harshness and directness of the subjects presented, his recordings are characterized by compositional elegance.

Pellegrin lives alternately in Rome and New York .
