As part of these concerts, the choir also gives premieres and world premieres, such as the Munich premiere of the St. Matthew Passion (1781) by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788) and the world premiere of the oratorio "Hymnen an die Nacht" - oratorio for speakers, solos (Soprano and tenor) Choir and large orchestra Op.30 "by Dirk-Michael Kirsch (* 1958). In the Oscar-winning film adaptation of the musical Cabaret , the Paul Gerhardt Choir made a scenic appearance.

repertoire

The choir's repertoire includes sacred works from all epochs - such as the oratorios of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) and the choral symphonies of the Romantic period - as well as compositions that are rarely heard. The above-mentioned Munich premiere of the St. Matthew Passion (1781) by C. P. E. Bach as well as The Dream of Gerontius by Edward Elgar (1857–1934) and other works testify to this concept .

The Paul Gerhardt Choir also performed several vespers of Mary by Claudio Monteverdi (1547–1643) and Golgotha by Frank Martin (1890–1974).

The stylistic span of the a cappella interpretations extends from the Middle Ages to the modern, for example in the Magnificat concert (July 2011) with settings of Marian texts by Guillaume Du Fay (approx. 1397–1474) and Josquin Desprez (approx. 1440–1521) to Francis Poulenc (1899–1963), Arvo Pärt (* 1935) and Trond Kverno (* 1945).

advancement

Structurally, the Paul Gerhardt Choir belongs to the Paul Gerhardt Congregation Munich Laim, from which it is financially supported and whose services he regularly organizes with a cappella works and pieces accompanied by instruments. The Paul Gerhardt Choir is also funded by the City of Munich and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria . The co-financing is carried out by a development association.

history

The Paul Gerhardt Choir was founded by members of the Paul Gerhardt Community in 1913 on the occasion of the inauguration of the former community church on Agnes-Bernauer-Strasse. In 1945 Adolf Hartmut Gärtner took over the direction of the choir for the next 41 years and established the Paul Gerhardt Choir as a concert choir. A detailed choir chronicle, which can be accessed on the choir's homepage as well as the concert chronicle from 1986 onwards, extends from the beginnings to the present day.
