Paul Winston McCracken (born December 29, 1915 in Richland , Keokuk County , Iowa , † August 3, 2012 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) was an American economist , university professor and business manager who was also chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers .

Life

After attending school, he first studied mathematics at William Penn College in Oskaloosa and finished this in 1937 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Mathematics). He then completed a postgraduate degree in economics at Harvard University in 1942 with a Master of Arts (MA Economics), and in 1948 there was also a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D. Economics). He then took over a professorship in economics at the University of Michigan in 1948 and taught there until 1969 at the Graduate School of Business Administration, where he was last released between 1965 and 1969 because of a consultancy for the Council of Economic Advisers. He later served on the Presidential Council of Berea College in Berea , Kentucky .

In addition to his teaching activities, he was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers between 1956 and 1959 and later its chairman from 1969 to 1971. In that capacity, he was one of President Richard Nixon's closest economic policy advisers . In 1971 he returned to the University of Michigan, where he was Professor of Business Administration until his retirement from Edmund Ezra Day University . He was also a member of the President's Advisory Board on Economic Policy during Ronald Reagan's presidency from 1981 to 1986 .

He has also worked for numerous economic and political institutions, including director of research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis , economist at the Department of Commerce and chairman of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBEA). In addition, he was involved in the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) as interim president in 1986, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Council on Foreign Relations and the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, one in Midland (Michigan) based think tank , the deals in particular with the free market .

McCracken eventually took on roles in the private sector and was a member of the Boards of Directors of Dow Chemical , Johnson Controls , Lincoln National , Sara Lee and Texas Instruments , among others .

He died on August 3, 2012 at the age of 96, leaving behind two daughters. His wife died in 2005.
