Austan Dean Goolsbee (born August 18, 1969 in Waco , Texas ) is an American economist . From September 9, 2010 to August 5, 2011, he succeeded Christina Romer as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors , a body in the Executive Office of US President Barack Obama .

Career

Austan Goolsbee studied economics at Yale University, where he became a member of the Skull & Bones fraternity .

Goolsbee was a Robert P. Gwinn Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago on leave for political office . Previously, he was a research fellow at the American Bar Foundation , a research assistant at the National Bureau of Economic Research at Cambridge, and a member of the Economic Advisory Board of the Congressional Budget Office .

Goolsbee has served as Barack Obama's economic advisor since the successful election campaign as a US Senator for Illinois. He advised the Senate in 2004 and was senior economic advisor to Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. Goolsbee is also a senior economist at the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI) and the Democratic Leadership Council . As Obama's economic advisor, Goolsbee had put forward an economic program for the takeover of government in the run-up to the 2008 presidential election , which aimed to improve the economic situation of the working class and middle class and saw their participation in the profitable stock market as a means of doing so.

Goolsbee's research focuses on the Internet, the emerging economy, the American government's economic policies, and taxes. In the winter semester of 2008 he offered a course for economics and politics in the telecommunications, media and technology sectors.

In April 2006, Goolsbee began writing for the New York Times business column. He had previously written a column for Slate.com for which he won the 2006 Peter Lisagor Award for Exemplary Journalism. Goolsbee is the author of numerous publications in various peer-reviewed journals.

On June 6, 2011, the US Presidential Office announced that Goolsbee is leaving his position as chairman of the US President’s Economic Advisory Board and will return to the University of Chicago at the beginning of the semester.

Goolsbee was also a Fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation from 2000 to 2002 and a Fulbright Scholar from 2006 to 2007.
