Paul Temple

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Temple is a fictional detective writer and private investigator in the novels of the British writer Francis Durbridge (1912-1998). Some novels were written together with John Thewes , Douglas Rutherford or Charles Hatten . The novels written with Rutherford appeared under the common pseudonym "Paul Temple", so that the protagonist himself appears as the actual "novelist".

Together with his wife, the journalist Louise, who mainly appears under her nom de plume Steve Trent, he solves his cases with creativity and intelligence and, from today's perspective, relatively little "action". The characteristics of the typical “ Whodunit ” stories (“Who was it?”) Include polished dialogues and a subtle sense of humor.

Movies

Paul Temple was “born” as a radio detective in the 1930s and was only later adapted for the medium of film, for the first time in 1946 in “Send for Paul Temple”. There were a total of four films about Paul Temple:

Durbridge licensed the character to the BBC , which turned the stories into a 52-part television series from 1969, of which 39 episodes were shot in the first international co-production in television history, together with ZDF . The main role in the series played by the British actor Francis Matthews (also known as Lieutenant Compton in the Miss Marple film killer Ahoy! (Murder Ahoy) , 1964). Ros Drinkwater played the role of Steve (often in German dubbing: Stiefelchen ) . The German voice actors were Gert Günther Hoffmann and Margot Leonard . The theme music was by Ron Grainer .

Radio plays

From 1938 to 1968 the British BBC produced 29 Paul Temple cases as radio plays , the best-known cast being that with Peter Coke as Paul Temple and Marjorie Westbury as Steve. Since 2005, some of the radio plays in this series have been re-broadcast by the BBC and published on CD and cassette.

From 1949 to the 1960s, the NWDR Cologne and the WDR produced German versions of some radio plays. Paul Temple was spoken here by René Deltgen and Paul Klinger (in the last case, the Alex case ). Steve lent her voice to actresses Annemarie Cordes (in eight episodes), Elisabeth Scherer , Margot Leonard , Ursula Langrock and Irmgard Först . Charlie, servant of the Temples, was portrayed by Herbert Hennies , Otto Daue and Eric Schildkraut . Sir Graham Forbes was spoken by Kurt Lieck and once by Georg Eilert (Gregory affair). Well-known German actors appeared as other actors, such as Kerstin de Ahna , Gerd Baltus , Frank Barufski , Friedrich W. Bauschulte , Karl Heinz Bender , Pinkas Braun , Karl Brückel , Kaspar Brüninghaus , Heinz von Cleve , Wolfgang Eichberger , Wolfgang Engels , Walter Giller , Arno Görke , Magda Hennings , Ernst Hilbich , P. Walter Jacob , Walter Jokisch , Marianne Kehlau , Paul Klinger, Gustav Knuth , Peter René Körner , Edith Lechtape , Fritzleo Liertz , Werner Lieven , Jürgen von Manger , Alf Marholm , Kurt Meister , Alwin Joachim Meyer , Lola Müthel , Hermann Pfeiffer , Ursula von Reibnitz , Werner Rundshagen , Alwin Michael Rueffer , Heinz Schacht , Franz Schafheitlin , Heinz Schimmelpfennig , Karl-Maria Schley , Herbert Steinmetz , Lilly Towska , Gisela Trowe , Elke Twiesselmann , Günther Ungeheuer , Wolfgang Wahl , Siegfried Wischnewski and others. Peter René Körner alone appeared in nine of the twelve productions between 1949 and 1961 in a wide variety of roles. Mostly as a shady figure, either as the main culprit or a person involved in the matter. Only once in the Lawrence case did he play a detective ( Inspector Ivor ). Margot Leonard, who spoke the role of Steve Temple in the Alex case in 1968 , then took on this role again in the television series of the same name , this time as the German dubbing voice of Ros Drinkwater.

The directors were Eduard Hermann in 10 episodes from 1949 to 1963, Otto Düben in the last two productions and Fritz Schröder-Jahn in Paul Temple and the Gregory Affair (1949), together with Eduard Hermann. The music for all radio plays comes from Hans Jönsson . In most cases Marianne de Barde was responsible for the translation of the English original .

Also the BR ( Paul Temple and the Conrad case , directed by Willy Purucker , with Karl John and Rosemarie Fendel as the Temple couple, Adolf Ziegler as Sir Graham Forbes and Jürgen Arndt as the servant Charlie, as well as Fritz Straßner , Elinor von Wallerstein , Horst Tappert , Heidi Brühl , Erik Jelde , Wolfgang Büttner , Hans Cossy , Jürgen Goslar , Ernst Ginsberg and many others) as well as the SR ( Paul Temple and the Fall in Geneva , director: Wilm ten Haaf ) tried their hand at Paul Temple radio plays in 1959 and 1966 however not as successful as the Westdeutscher Rundfunk.

In 2014, the annotated reconstruction of the episode Paul Temple and the Gregory Case , believed to be lost, was performed on stage by Bastian Pastewka + accomplices and published as a radio play on CD and on the radio.

In the Netherlands , too , the radio station AVRO produced and broadcast numerous radio plays about the London private investigator between 1939 and 1969. However, most of the productions are no longer preserved. A special feature is the changed naming for the title hero. At the initiative of the AVRO director at the time, Willem Vogt , Paul Temple became Paul Vlaanderen and his wife Steve Ina . The first radio play was broadcast in February 1939 under the title Spreek met Vlaanderen en het komt in orde . The conclusion in January 1969 was Paul Vlaanderen en het Alex-mysterie .
