Paul Vincze

Paul Vincze (born Pál Vincze ; born August 15, 1907 in Galgagyörk , Pest County , Hungary ; † March 5, 1994 in Magagnosc , France ) was a Hungarian-British medalist .

Live and act

Paul Vincze was the son of a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. He studied at the Applied Arts School in Budapest and later worked in Ede Telcs' studio for seven years . From 1935 to 1937 he studied on a scholarship at the Collegium Hungaricum in Rome and then returned to Hungary. Because of the rise of National Socialism, he emigrated to Great Britain in 1938, where he set up a studio in the Chelsea district of London . In 1948 he became a British citizen. He also had a house in Magagnosc, a suburb of Grasse in southern France. In 1958 he married the French Emilienne Chauzeix.

Paul Vincze's first works included portrait medals by Harold Mattingly (1947) and Charles Holden (1950). In 1948 he designed a medal with which he took part in the art competitions of the Summer Olympics. He became known in 1953 for his design of a medal for the coronation of Elizabeth II.

Other works by Paul Vincze included a portrait medal by Herbert Samuel, 1st Viscount Samuel (1960), a series of medals for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (1964), a medal for the Smithsonian Institution (1965), a portrait medal by Yehudi Menuhin (1965), a Florence Nightingale Medal for the Societe Commemorative de Femmes Celebres (1966) and commemorative medals for the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings (1966), the 50th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration (1967) and Man's First Landing on the Moon for the Apollo 11 moon landing (1969).

He designed course coins for Malawi , Rhodesia , Nigeria and Guinea, among others .

Paul Vincze was a member of the Art Workers Guild from 1941 and a member of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society from around 1946. In 1961 he became a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.
