Peter Donat (archaeologist)

Peter Donat (born December 17, 1934 in Würzburg ) is a German medieval archaeologist .

Peter Donat graduated from high school in 1953 and began studying prehistory and early history as well as classical archeology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena that same year . In 1957 he passed the diploma examination - the diploma thesis supervised by Gotthard Neumann is entitled Three Cord Ceramic Burial Mounds from Etzdorf - and was then department head at the Staatliche Museen Meiningen until 1960 . In 1960 Donat became director of the Steinsburg Museum in Römhild . The doctorate took place in April 1966 in Jena with a thesis on the subject of the prehistoric and early historical settlement of the upper Werra area , experts were Gotthard Neumann and Günter Behm-Blancke . The doctorate B followed in May 1976 at the social sciences research area of ​​the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , assessor of the work House, Farm and Village in Central Europe from the 7th to 12th centuries. Archaeological contributions to the development and structure of the rural settlement were Joachim Herrmann , Paul Grimm and Eckhard Müller-Mertens . From 1980 (?) In 1996/97 Donat worked on a third-party funded project at the Humanities Center for the History and Culture of East Central Europe (GWZO) at the University of Leipzig .

Donat deals with the Slavic and German colonization of Central and Eastern Europe. In addition to scientific work, he was also known for popular science books, especially for children.
