Peter Sodann [ zo'dan ] (born June 1, 1936 in Meißen ) is a German actor , director and theater manager .

Life

Peter Sodann comes from a working-class family and grew up in Weinböhla near Meißen . At the age of 44, his father was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1944 and died on the Eastern Front that same year. Then was a member of the Free German Youth (FDJ). After an apprenticeship as a toolmaker , he made up his Abitur by visiting the workers and farmers faculty from 1954 to 1957. He then studied law at the University of Leipzig before moving to the Leipzig Theater School in 1959 .

In Leipzig he headed the student cabaret "Rat der Mockers" , in which Ernst Röhl was a member, among others . After a program was classified as counterrevolutionary in 1961 , cabaret had to break up. Then u. a. the party organ Neues Deutschland shoved a stuffed dog up the ass. Then, in custody taken from the SED excluded and because of seditious incitement suspended sentence to one year and ten months in prison. After his release from prison in 1962, he trained as a lathe operator at VEB Starkstromanlagenbau Leipzig . From 1963 he was able to continue his studies.

He has been married to his wife Cornelia (née Brenner) for the second time since 1995. He is the father of two sons and two daughters and lives with his family in Staucha (district of Stauchitz) near Meißen. His son Franz Sodann was elected in the state elections in 2014 and 2019 for the left in the Saxon state parliament.

Professional career

He had his first engagement in 1964 at the Berliner Ensemble under Helene Weigel . In 1966, Sodann moved to the Erfurt Municipal Theaters , in 1971 to the Karl-Marx-Stadt Municipal Theater , where he carried out his first directorial work, and in 1975 as Drama Director at the Magdeburg Municipal Theaters . A large number of classical and Brecht roles were part of his repertoire as a stage actor and director.

The new theater (nt) in Halle (Saale)

Since 1980 he lived and worked in Halle (Saale) , initially as acting director of the Landestheater and until July 2, 2005 as director of the “new theater” (nt). Since 1981 he and the entire ensemble have turned an old cinema hall into a cultural center of Halle. Halle's “ Culture Island ” now includes the Great Hall, a court theater, a chamber theater “Kommode”, a puppet theater, a gallery, a library, in which then between 1945 and 1989 the GDR collected literature that was partially rescued from the garbage, a literature café and a theater bar "Strieses Biertunnel", named after the main character of the theater director Emanuel Striese from the comedy The Robbery of the Sabine Women .

Sodann's directorship ended against his will in the 2004/2005 season, as he had the wish to retire at the age of 70 in 2006 with the 25th anniversary of his theater. The city of Halle (Saale) insisted on a new director even before this point in time. Although he was made an honorary citizen by the city of Halle on April 28, 2005 for his services , he feels (in his own words) "put in front of the door". His successor is Christoph Werner , the previous director of the Halle Puppet Theater .

In the 1970s, Sodann began working in film and television, where he embodied trust-inspiring, fatherly characters in contemporary films. After the fall of the Wall, he became known through television productions, especially from 1991 as Inspector Bruno Ehrlicher in the series " Tatort " , together with Bernd Michael Lade as Inspector Kain . On November 11, 2007, after 45 cases, their last crime scene was as a Leipzig investigator duo under the title “The Trap”.

You can also listen to the radio broadcaster Radio Brocken in Halle (Saale) , where he gives thoughts and suggestions on how to start the evening . Together with the former Federal Minister Norbert Blüm , Sodann went on tour through smaller halls in autumn 2007. They played their own cabaret program with the title "Ost-West-Vis-à-Vis".

Sodann has been the ambassador for the Children's Hospice Foundation in Central Germany since August 2005 and is committed to terminally ill children and their families. On February 25, 2006 he took over the chairmanship of the newly founded Silberbüchse e. V., the support association of the Karl May House in Hohenstein-Ernstthal .

Since 1990 Peter Sodann has been collecting books that were published between 1945 and 1990 in the publishing houses of the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR, “in order to secure them for future generations in a documentary way”, according to the chairman of the association founded in 2007, Eberhard Richter. After a long search for a suitable location for the collection, which has now grown to over 600,000 volumes, the community of Stauchitz provided the association with buildings from a former manor in 2011 .

The Staucha Court Theater is part of the Peter Sodann Library

The Peter Sodann Library was officially opened in May 2012 . Then plans to set up further libraries of this type in East Germany. A cooperative is to be established for this purpose. The aim is to ensure that the continued existence of the libraries no longer depends on them alone, but is borne by many.

politics

On July 4, 2005, Sodann announced that he would be available for the 2005 Bundestag election in Saxony as a non-party leading candidate on an open list of the Left Party.PDS , which later became part of the Die Linke party . Two days later, he withdrew his announcement because a candidacy and possibly a later mandate would not be compatible with media presence due to the equal opportunities for all applicants. Actors and other employees who run for an election may not appear as creative persons (actors, presenters, etc.) in the television or radio programs of ARD six weeks before the election as applicants for a mandate or as elected representatives , according to ARD's internal guidelines . However, his withdrawal was also attributed to Katja Kipping's fierce criticism of non-compliance with the party statute, which stipulates a woman for all top list positions in the federal states.

On October 14, 2008 Die Linke announced that Sodann would run as the party's candidate for the office of Federal President in May 2009 . In the media, there was some fierce criticism, including Sodann's doubts in October 2008 as to whether the Federal Republic of Germany was democratic. Then praised the Basic Law and said that he saw democracy in Germany today as “weakening” or not a “real democracy”. He then explained this by stating that, in his view, German politics did not take human dignity seriously ( Article 1 of the Basic Law ).

In October 2008, Sodann caused a sensation when he said that if he were not just a commissioner at the “crime scene” , he would arrest the then head of Deutsche Bank , Josef Ackermann .

On May 23, 2009, Sodann received 91 votes in the Federal Assembly for the election of the Federal President (two votes more than Die Linke delegate had). The Federal President Horst Köhler ( CDU ), who was in office until May 31, 2010, won the election in the first ballot. In the 2009 Bundestag election , Sodann publicly called for the election of the Left Party.
