Philipp Otto von Grumbkow (born May 12, 1684 in Berlin ; † August 26, 1752 in Lupow ) was a Prussian statesman in Pomerania.

origin

He came from the Pomeranian noble family Grumbkow . His father Joachim Ernst von Grumbkow (* 1637; † 1690) was the Brandenburg Privy Councilor. His mother Gertrude Sophie (* around 1653; 1693) was a daughter of the Privy Councilor Otto von Grote .

Two of his brothers made careers in the military: Friedrich Wilhelm von Grumbkow (* 1678; † 1739) rose in the Prussian army to field marshal general. Friedrich Ludwig von Grumbkow (* 1683, † 1745) became lieutenant general and commander of the Sonnenstein fortress in the Saxon army.

Career

Philipp Otto von Grumbkow was enrolled at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) from 1697 . Afterwards he was in Polish military service, most recently as colonel and regimental commander.

In 1712 Grumbkow switched to Prussian services. In 1713 he became a councilor in the Pomeranian government in Stargard . The government's scope of duties was essentially limited to jurisdiction and church and school matters. Later Grumbkow received the title of a secret council. In 1718 he became captain of the Lauenburg and Bütow regions . In 1720 he was also Vice Chancellor of Western Pomerania, then in 1721 Chancellor. In 1723 he also became the first president of the newly formed Pomeranian War and Domain Chamber . In the same year the Stargard government and chamber moved to Stettin , which Prussia had acquired in the Treaty of Stockholm in 1720 . In Szczecin, Grumbkow gradually became the chief president of all the provincial authorities in the Pomeranian province . In 1730 he received the title of a secret budget council. In 1739 the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I awarded him the Order of the Black Eagle .

Grumbkow gave up his office as president of the Pomeranian War and Domain Chamber in 1742; The previous Chamber Director Georg Wilhelm von Aschersleben became the new Chamber President . In 1747 he was retired from his other offices, especially as President of the Pomeranian Government. However, he retained the office of captain of Lauenburg and Bütow until 1750. From 1742 he belonged to the Freemasons .

In Stettin, Grumbkow built a stately palace on Roßmarkt from 1723 to 1726. For this construction he received financial support from King Friedrich Wilhelm I , the plans came from the Prussian major general and chief of the engineering corps Peter von Montargues , from 1724 the chief construction director Philipp Gerlach worked on the construction. The palace, named Witzlow's house after its later owners , was demolished in 1890 to make way for a building for the National Insurance Company .

Grumbkow was the hereditary lord of the Lupow , Runow , Zechlin , Varzmin and Darsow estates . He died in 1752 on his Lupow estate.

Marriages and offspring

Grumbkow married Ernestine Lucie Freiin von Danckelmann on September 25, 1716 (* March 24, 1692; † December 29, 1719). The couple had the following children:

In his second marriage he married Henrietta Scholastika von Schlabrendorff , the daughter of Otto Christian von Schlabrendorff and Ida Elisabeth von Carnitz .

His third marriage was Anna Augusta, born von Münchow and widowed von Kochanski .
