Life

He later studied with Yvonne Loriod (the wife of the composer Olivier Messiaen ) at the Paris Conservatory and with Maria Curcio in London. In 1973 he won the Chamber Music Prize of the Paris Conservatory and first prize at the Olivier Messiaen International Competition . In 1976 he was one of the founding members of the Ensemble intercontemporain , where he also played the harpsichord , celesta , synthesizer , glockenspiel and organ . Pierre-Laurent Aimard is professor at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and at the Paris Conservatory.

In 2009 the award-winning documentary by the two directors Lilian Franck and Robert Cibis , Pianomania , showed Aimard during the recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Art of Fugue . The film was very well received nationally and internationally, was celebrated at many festivals and included in the catalog of the Goethe Institute .

In 2017 Aimard was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize , often referred to as the Nobel Prize in Music.

repertoire

Aimard is particularly committed to contemporary music. He was the soloist in numerous world premieres of works such as Répons by Pierre Boulez , Piano Piece XIV by Karlheinz Stockhausen , Le désenchantement du monde by Tristan Murail or the etudes numbers 11 and 13 by György Ligeti , whose entire piano works he recorded.

Proof of his versatility as a pianist is his handling of the classical and romantic repertoire, from which he would like to find new sides with curiosity and a sense of structure and clarity. Reference is made to the highly acclaimed recordings of Beethoven 's Piano Concertos No. 1–5 or Dvořák's Piano Concerto (each with Nikolaus Harnoncourt ). His recording of Mozart piano concerts with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe is one of the interesting contributions to the Mozart Year 2006 . In 2012, on the occasion of the 150th birthday of Claude Debussy, he recorded some of Debussy's works.
