Pierre Raymond Audi (born November 1957 in Beirut , Lebanon ) is a French - Lebanese theater director and theater manager .

Life

Pierre Audi was born as the first child of the Lebanese banker and politician Raymond Audi from Sidon and his wife Andrée Michel Fattal. Audi has two siblings, his brother Paul is a philosopher and author, his sister Shérine is also a banker.

During his school days at the French grammar school in Beirut, Pierre Audi initiated a film club and invited Pier Paolo Pasolini and Jacques Tati as lecturers , among others . For family reasons, he moved to Paris , where he attended the Collège Stanislas . When Pierre Audi was 17 years old, the family went to England . At Exeter College of the University of Oxford , he studied from 1975 to 1978 history and staged in November 1977 for the Oxford University Dramatic Society (Oud) at the Oxford Playhouse Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare . Here he discovered his real calling as a director.

In 1979 he founded the experimental Almeida Theater in London-Islington , where he was artistic director until 1989 . In 1990 Jonathan Kent and Ian McDiarmid took over the artistic direction of the London theater. His work at the Almeida Theater earned him an international reputation and in 1988 was appointed artistic director of the De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam . Numerous engagements as a guest director have taken him to various European opera houses. From 2005 to 2014 he was also the artistic director of the Holland Festival . After his contract in Amsterdam expired in 2014, he returned to London, where he staged the world premiere of "Thebans" by Julian Anderson and Frank McGuinness at the English National Opera (ENO) .
