Pieter Schoubroeck (* around 1570/1573 in Lambrecht ; † June 28, 1607 in Frankenthal ), also Pieter Schaubroeck , was a Flemish painter in Frankenthal in the Electoral Palatinate.

resume

His father, the preacher Niclaes Schoubroeck, came to Frankenthal for the first time in 1566 as a persecuted Calvinist faith. His mother was Clarken de Wale. Schoubroeck was an important representative of the Frankenthal-based Flemish group of painters, to which Hendrick van der Borcht and Anton Mirou also belonged. Pieter Schroubroeck completed an apprenticeship as a painter in 1583 at Roment Verbiest in Mechelen .

In 1586, father Niclaes and probably his son Pieter also lived in Heßheim near Frankenthal, where Coninxloo also lived and worked. Schoubroeck's Gillis van Coninxloo is assumed to be another teacher . During a trip to Rome in 1595, Schroubroeck came into contact with the works of his compatriots Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel the Elder , which shaped his style. The painter stayed in Nuremberg from 1597 to 1600. He was married to Catharina Caimox (also: Caymox), daughter of the art dealer Cornelis Caimox, who lived in Frankenthal from 1581 to 1588 and traded at the Leipzig and Frankfurt trade fairs . The godfather of the Schoubroecks' son Peter, who was baptized in 1600, was Henricus Mirou, the father of the painter Anton Mirou.

Works

Pieter Schoubroeck was a painter of realistic landscapes with fantastic scenes, which he often illuminated effectively with fire or moonlight. In addition to religious works around the Old and New Testament , he also depicted historical events such as the destruction of Troy .

Schoubroeck's works can now be found in museums such as the Musée des beaux-arts et d'archéologie de Besançon , the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig , the Gemäldegarlerie Alte Meister in Kassel , the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim , the Alte Pinakothek in Munich , the Saarland Museum Saarbrücken and the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer .

In the art market , up to $ 185,000 was paid for his oil paintings.

Trivia

On several websites of the European art market his place of birth is indicated as Heßheim or even Herzheim instead of Lambrecht (Pfalz). His connection to Heßheim does not begin until 1586.
