Elisabeth Charlotte "Pipilotti" Rist (born June 21, 1962 in Grabs , resident in Altstätten ) is a Swiss artist . In addition to video installations and experimental films, her work also includes environments , objects , computer art and digital photo montages .

Life

She has been nicknamed "Pipilotti", which is also her stage name today, since she was a child, after the popular children's book character Pippi Longstocking .

From 1982 to 1986, Rist studied utility, illustration and photography at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna . From 1986 to 1988 she studied audiovisual communication (video) at the Schule für Gestaltung in Basel , according to her own statements mainly to have access to professional video technology . She then worked as a freelance computer graphic artist for industrial video studios.

From 1988 to 1994 Pipilotti Rist was a member of the music band and performance group Les Reines Prochaines , with which she also released several records.

In 1997, she was the second time at the Biennale in Venice represented where he was awarded the Premio 2000th In the same year she was appointed artistic director of the Swiss national exhibition Expo.01 (realized as Expo.02 ), but resigned 14 months after the appointment.

In 2002 she taught at the invitation of artist and professor Paul McCarthy for a year at the University of California, Los Angeles .

Pipilotti Rist has a son with her partner (* 2002). His first name "Himalaya" appears in Himalaya's Sister's Living Room (2000), Himalaya Goldstein's Stube (1999) and as a book title (1998).

From 2005 to 2009 Pipilotti Rist worked on her first feature film, Pepperminta . Rist has received several awards, including the Premio 2000 of the Venice Biennale (1997), the Wolfgang Hahn Prize (1999) and the 01 award (2004) for extraordinary artistic or scientific achievements in the multimedia field. This includes the appointment as honorary professor at the Berlin University of the Arts .

Rist lives and works in Zurich .

technology

Rist began making Super 8 films while still a student . Her films are mostly only a few minutes long and have been altered in color by means of technical effects, changed in the speeds and underlaid with music. Some of the alienation effects specifically used by Rist are presented as examples in the Compendium of Image Disturbances in Analog Video (2013). In her art, Rist deals, among other things, with sexuality , gender differences and the body image of people, especially women.

In contrast to many other conceptual artists , their works are characterized by their joy in optical , acoustic and haptic sensuality , cheerful, intense colourfulness and apparent naivety . Rist received early attention from feminist art criticism in particular . Her work is now represented in the most important contemporary art collections around the world.

Works

I'm Not The Girl Who Misses Much ( I'm not the girl that much missed , 1986) shows Rist as round dances and in a black dress that exposes her breasts, and with red lips on camera -hampelt. Most of the time, the images are monochrome and very blurred; the picture is additionally disturbed by slowing down, accelerating and dissolving effects. Rist sings the line “I'm not the girl who misses much” repetitively to himself, a variation of the first line of the Beatles song Happiness Is a Warm Gun . Towards the end of the five-minute clip, the picture changes to a blue tint and the original sound of the song is faded in. A collage of extremely distorted and choppy video snippets forms the end.

She became internationally known with Pickelporno (1992), which revolves around the topic of the female body and sexual arousal. The fisheye camera moves very close to the bodies of a naked couple. The images are immersed in intense colors, so that the body shapes appear strange, sensual and ambiguous in the viewer's visual experience. For Rist, the film was an attempt to experiment with feminine pornography .

Ever is Over All ( Always is everywhere / Always is over , 1997) shows a young woman breaking the windows of parked cars with a torch lily in slow motion . A policewoman approaches her and passes by with a friendly greeting. The video installation was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art New York , among others .

From 6 April to 20 May 2000, the 16-minute videos were Open My Glade ((2000) my clearing Open ) once per hour on a giant screen at Times Square , New York shown; the installation took place as part of the Messages to the Public program , which has existed since 1980. The video shows Rist pressing her face and hands against a pane of glass as if she were trapped in this screen.

The multimedia installation Himalaya's Sister's Living Room ( The Living Room of Himalaya's Sister , 2000) also caused a sensation - a room in which, in addition to several video projections, a large collection of nostalgic furniture, utensils and jewelry and kitsch objects from the 50s, 60s and 1970s is arranged include: lamps, carpets, plastic flowers, minerals, stacks of magazines and books. In between there are additional projection surfaces on which repetitive clips run. The work resembles an everyday archaeological collection of popular culture from past decades, which is not, however, well-organized as a museum, but rather appears chaotic and overloaded.

Car covered with a red plastic layer

In St. Gallen, together with the architect Carlos Martinez and on behalf of the Raiffeisen Bank , she designed the space between their buildings as a city lounge covered with a red plastic layer (opened in spring 2005).

The Letzigraben open-air swimming pool in Zurich, built by Max Frisch between 1947 and 1949, was completely renovated in 2005–2007. On the occasion of its reopening on June 18, 2007 after dark on the illuminated diving platform of the outdoor pool, the video installation Electronic Homage to Letzis and Brios took place. The floor of the diving pool served as a projection surface, the image was wavy due to the moving water surface.

In 2009, filmmaker Michael Hegglin made The Color of Your Socks - A Year with Pipilotti Rist , a 53-minute documentary with and about Pipilotti Rist, produced by Catpics Coproductions ( Zurich ) and Amour Fou Filmproduktion ( Vienna ). The film shows the artist at work in her studio in Zurich, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, at the Venice Biennale , at Art Basel and while shooting her first feature film Pepperminta .

Rist on her interdisciplinary work with the medium of video: "Video is like a compact handbag, it contains everything from literature to painting to music."
