Pirmin Schwegler (born March 9, 1987 in Ettiswil ) is a Swiss football player . The midfielder , who was part of the Swiss national team for several years , is under contract with the Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia. Before that, apart from a one-year break, he played 13 years in the German Bundesliga for Bayer 04 Leverkusen , Eintracht Frankfurt , TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Hannover 96 . In the top German division, Schwegler played 262 games and scored seven goals. He played 14 games for the Swiss national team.

Career

The midfielder was a member of Swiss national teams (U-16s and up) from May 2, 2000, for which he played 32 international matches.

Schwegler played on loan from FC Luzern in the 2005/06 season at BSC Young Boys . The German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen signed him in May 2006 to 2010. He made his Bundesliga debut on September 17, 2006 in an away game against Eintracht Frankfurt (1: 3).

For the 2009/10 season he was brought to Eintracht by the local new coach Michael Skibbe , for whom he scored a goal in his first appearance on August 2, 2009 in the DFB Cup game against Offenbacher Kickers . Schwegler had already played under Skibbe for two years in Leverkusen. He scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 2-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 2009/10 season. He made his international debut on September 14, 2006 in the UEFA Cup match against FC Sion . On August 12, 2009 he was first used in the Swiss national team. In March 2015, he announced his resignation from the national team after he had only been called up sporadically. In the 2011/12 season , Schwegler was appointed team captain by coach Armin Veh as the successor to the Brazilian Chris , who had moved to VfL Wolfsburg .

For the 2014/15 season , Schwegler moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , where he signed a contract until June 30, 2017. For the 2017/18 season , Schwegler went to Hannover 96 on a free transfer . He received a contract that ran until 2019, which was prematurely extended to 2020 in May 2018, but was only valid for the Bundesliga.

After the end of the 2018/19 season , in which he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with Hanover, the Swiss moved to the Australian A-League with the Western Sydney Wanderers . On September 1, 2020, he leaves down under and ends his active career.

Private

At the age of 18 months, Pirmin Schwegler fell ill with leukemia and has been cured since 2003.

His brother Christian Schwegler is also a professional footballer.
