The 2. Bundesliga 2011/12 was the 38th season of the second highest German division in men's football. It began on July 15, 2011 and ended on May 6, 2012. The relegation games between the sixteenth of the Bundesliga and the third of the 2nd Bundesliga were for the 10th and 15th May 2012, the games between the sixteenth of the 2nd Bundesliga and the third of the 3rd division scheduled for May 11th and 14th, 2012.
For the first time since the 1995/96 season , the Northeast German Football Association was again represented by five clubs. There were also two clubs from the area of the North German Football Association , five from the area of the West German Football and Athletics Association and six from the South German Football Association . As in the 2010/11 season, clubs from the area of the Southwest Football Regional Association were not represented. For the first time since the 1961/62 season , there was another Frankfurt city derby between Eintracht Frankfurt and FSV Frankfurt .
Two game days before the end of the season, SpVgg Greuther Fürth secured promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time . Eintracht Frankfurt managed to get back up on the same day. In the relegation Fortuna Düsseldorf prevailed against Hertha BSC and also rose.
