Stefan Leitl (born August 29, 1977 in Munich ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach . Since February 2019 he has been the head coach of the second division team SpVgg Greuther Fürth .
Career
As a player
As the youngest of five brothers in Ismaning grown Leitl began his career with FC Ismaning . In 1987 he joined the youth department of FC Bayern Munich , to which he was a member until 1996 and then to the professional squad until 1998. Without playing in the Bundesliga and only active in the game for the amateurs, he moved to the Regionalliga Süd for SV Lohhof , where he developed into a leading player.
In 1999 he left SV Lohhof and signed a contract with the second division club 1. FC Nürnberg , for which he played until 2001 - last year in the Bundesliga. Leitl played his first game as a professional on August 15, 1999 (1st matchday) in a 3-0 home win over SV Waldhof Mannheim ; he scored his first goal on August 29, 1999 (4th matchday) in a 2-1 home win over Fortuna Cologne . He played his first of five Bundesliga games on August 8, 2001 (5th matchday) in the 0-1 defeat at TSV 1860 Munich .
In the following three years he was under contract with SpVgg Unterhaching - switched during the winter break in 2002 , initially played in the 2nd Bundesliga , relegated to the regional league and made direct promotion with his team.
From 2004 he played under coach Bruno Labbadia until 2007 for SV Darmstadt 98, which had been promoted to the Regionalliga Süd . After relegation to the Hessenliga, Leitl moved to FC Ingolstadt , with whom he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in the second season; after that he was team captain . With the club relegated to the third division at the end of the 2008/09 season , Leitl managed to return to the second division immediately with third place in the table and two relegation games against Hansa Rostock . In the 4-1 away win against VfL Bochum on November 20, 2010 (13th matchday), he scored three goals for the first time in his professional career. On May 19, 2013 (34th matchday) in the 3-0 defeat in the home game against 1. FC Köln , he played his last game as an active footballer.
As a trainer
Afterwards he was first coach of the U17s of FC Ingolstadt. From September 2014 to August 2017 he was the U23 coach of the club.
Leitl completed his soccer teacher training at the Hennes-Weisweiler Academy in Hennef and received the UEFA Pro license on March 20, 2017 in Gravenbruch .
On August 22, 2017, after Maik Walpurgis was fired, Leitl became head coach of a professional team, the licensed team of his former club, FC Ingolstadt, for the first time on September 22. On September 22, 2018, exactly one year later, he was released from six games after a poor start to the season with just one win.
On February 5, 2019, the Upper Bavarian took over the Franconian second division club SpVgg Greuther Fürth from the released Damir Burić and led his first team training just a day later. In November 2019, his working paper , which was originally valid until the end of the 2019/20 season , was extended to June 2021.
National team
Leitl was appointed twice for the U21 national team in 1997: on November 25, the team scored 2-2 in Freiburg against Switzerland and on December 9 in Cologne a goalless draw against Belgium; in both games Leitl was only used in the first half. In 1998 the midfielder played twice for the Olympic team: On May 15, they played 1-1 against China in Toulon / France and on May 19, they lost 1: 1 to Portugal in Mallemort / France.
