Pirmin Stekeler-Weithofer (born December 21, 1952 in Meßkirch ) is a German philosopher and professor at the University of Leipzig.

Career and focus of work

Stekeler-Weithofer studied mathematics, theoretical linguistics and philosophy in Konstanz , Berlin, Prague and Berkeley . He currently teaches theoretical philosophy at the University of Leipzig . In my publisher , he was from 1996 to 2006, the biannual magazine dialectic out (first published in 2007 under the title Journal of Philosophy of Culture ). Since 1999 he has also worked as editor for the Philosophical Yearbook ( Verlag Karl Alber ) and since 2007 for the Philosophische Rundschau ( Mohr Siebeck Verlag ). From 2006 to 2008 he was President of the International Ludwig Wittgenstein Society. He has been a full member since 1998 and was President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig from 2008 to 2015 . Stekeler did teaching and research stays in Campinas, Pittsburgh, Swansea, New York and Paris.

Stekeler-Weithofer's work focuses on the philosophy of language , action theory and the philosophy of logic . In addition, he is particularly interested in the relationship between traditional ( Plato , Kant , Hegel ) and analytical philosophy ( Gottlob Frege , Ludwig Wittgenstein , Rudolf Carnap , Willard Van Orman Quine ).

Critique of pure theories and Hegel commentary

Stekeler considers the orientation in philosophy to schematically defined distinctions, formal-logical conclusions and the mathematical model to be overestimated. Rather, most of the philosophical texts with Gnomish language (e.g. texts by Hegel, Nietzsche and Heidegger) can be interpreted with sufficient clarity, and Stekeler carries out reconstructions and dialogical comments for these philosophers according to the criteria and standards of modern philosophy. Stekeler advises dissolving the encrustations of the current schematic analytical philosophy and instead establishing a robust approach to analogies and metaphors, especially in philosophical commentaries on theories. Theories are understood as a combination of distinctions, expressions and rules of inference that are conceptually set in the technical sciences to match the matter, just as one develops a language for generic processes in chemistry or for typical skills deficits in psychology:

Every mathematical model in science, logic and philosophy should be read as an analogy.

Pirmin Stekeler-Weithofer is one of the most important German-speaking Hegelians of the present. Hegel's master servant chapter is understood by Stekeler-Weiterhofer as a criticism of the Socratic-Platonic metaphor of the soul as the ruler of the body. Stekeler-Weithofer shows the development of personal self-confidence as self-education and self-control, instead of just referring to the social-theoretical archetype, a struggle for recognition between people: In a reading of Plato, he distinguishes between a psychḗ as a bearer of reputation and honor, which also over our death and an active aretḗ person (virtue), with whom we act conscientiously self-judging independently of praise or criticism from others. Care is taken that the soul is not misunderstood ontically as the real existence of a spiritual being called 'soul'.

Stekeler's language- analytical interpretation and the dialogical commentary on Hegel's Science of Logic , his dialogical commentary on the phenomenology of mind and his book Critique of Pure Theory , published in 2018, attracted particular attention .

Since statements about the whole world are extremely high-level comments that cannot be understood as statements about objects of a limited area, Stekeler justifies the language of speculative reflection on the whole. Critique of pure theory is criticism of all forms of philosophical isms , in particular of the confusion of scientific theories as a result of cooperative work on the term in the sense of canonizing generic standard knowledge with purely mathematical theories or dogmatic beliefs about the world.
