The Pleußmühle in Düren is an old flour mill on August-Klotz-Straße .

history

The Pleußmühle is one of the oldest known commercial enterprises in the city. It was first mentioned as a wooden mill in August 1261 because it stood in front of the wooden gate . At that time the owner was a Ludolf, provost of the Premonstratensian monastery in Ellen . On September 29, 1419, the Premonstratensian Monastery Reichenstein leased the rights to the mill to the Lewen couple for two Malter rye annual interest. On April 27, 1431, the couple von der Wye and Styna sold the mill to the convent at Ellen in return for an income of 7½ Malter rye. A Peter Lelges as the owner is proven on January 21, 1497.

On August 25, 1543, the mill burned down during the armed conflict between Emperor Karl V and Duke Wilhelm von Jülich. It was rebuilt in 1552. From 1584 to 1589, a wood miller Paul ran the mill. His successor was Gerhart, who was referred to as hultzmuller . On August 9, 1595, the couple Franz Nolden and his wife Peterschen were named. Theiss Hofacker owned the wood mill from 1599 to 1605. In 1612 Petersche is still mentioned in the city's files. The children of the late Arnold Godtschalck sold the mill on April 22, 1622 for 175 thalers to their stepfather Arnold Sanftleben. This family ran the mill from 1625 to 1676. In 1677 Wilhelm Lindlau appeared as a miller. He was followed in 1685 by Johann Jansen. Matthias Classen ran the mill from 1693 until his death in 1717. The son Johann Classen followed until 1735. Then his son-in-law Christian Hansen took over the mill. From 1746 to 1755 Tillmann Hermanns is known as Müller. From 1762 Christian Hansen was again run as a miller. He leased the mill for twelve years. After his death in 1769, his widow Kunigunde Schopen continued to run the mill. In 1774 Tillmann Hermanns was again given as Müller.

On August 18, 1784, Werner Plüss (Pleuß) was first mentioned as a wood miller. He must have bought the mill between 1774 and 1784. From 1762 to 1771, Plüss was a half-winner (leaseholder) of the Jesuitenhof in Düren on Nideggener Straße . Werner Plüss, also known as Ploes, died on September 7, 1785. His successor was Joseph Pleuss in the grinding and oil mill . In 1815 a Laurenz Joseph Pleuß is known as the owner of the wood mill. In 1822 a widow Pleuss was named as the owner.

On October 4, 1889, a major fire destroyed the mill and the residential building next to it. In 1922 a Melchior and a L. Pleuß were named in the statutes of the Düren pond cooperative. During the air raid on Düren on November 16, 1944, the building was shot to pieces. It was just a ruin. Melchior Pleuß has been running a hammer mill with roller mill in the leased Rölsdorf church since October 1st, 1946 . On December 1, 1950, the reconstruction was completed. Grain was ground again. On April 6, 1951, the Melchior Pleuß company, owned by Lorenz Pleuß, was entered in the trade register. In 1966 Lorenz Pleuss's widow was named as the operator. It ceased operations on August 31, 1969.

Use today

From November 10th to December 12th, 1980 young people occupied the vacant building in the city center in order to get a cultural youth center .

This squatting was triggered by a publication in the Dürener Zeitung. This had reported that the planned demolition of the mill, which had been accepted by the population to date, was by no means necessary for the expansion of the neighboring school, but was planned as part of a road widening.

In addition to the young people, individual local politicians from Düren , headed by Josef Vosen , later mayor of Düren , were involved in maintaining the mill in the course of the squatting .

After years of discussion in the political bodies, the city council decided to provide the financial means for the expansion of the mill.

On December 5, 1992, the Komm-Zentrum Düren (communication center) was inaugurated in the Pleußmühle . The local broadcaster Radio Rur established itself on the upper floors .

A Zuppinger waterwheel , which is fed by the mill pond and which was built by the Düren municipal utility and produces electricity, turns on the building today .

The Düren Art Promotion Association under its chairman Wilfrid Jochims supported the plan to set up a cultural center for young people through various events.
