The Ponte dell'Accademia bridge in Venice spans the Grand Canal and connects Campo S. Vidal with Campo della Carità, as well as the Sestieri San Marco with Dorsoduro . It owes its name to the Gallerie dell'Accademia , the most important collection of paintings in Venice , located on Campo della Carità . There were plans to build a bridge at this point as early as the 15th century, but the iron bridge, constructed according to the plans of the English engineer Alfred Henry Neille , was not opened until the Austro-Hungarian administration on November 20, 1854. They wanted to replace the relic of an unloved occupying power with a stone bridge. However, the winners of a related competition had to let their project go to the engineer Eugenio Miozzi , who also built the Ponte degli Scalzi . The wooden bridge of Miozzi was opened on January 15, 1933 and is used to cross the Grand Canal. The view from the Accademia to the church of Santa Maria della Salute is one of the most beautiful in the city.
