Poul Anderson (born November 25, 1926 in Bristol , Pennsylvania , † July 31, 2001 in Orinda , California ) was an American science fiction writer in the so-called "golden age" of science fiction. Some of his short stories were first published under the pseudonyms AA Craig , Michael Karageorge, and Winston P. Sanders .

life and work

Poul Anderson was born on November 25, 1926 in Bristol, Pennsylvania, to Scandinavian immigrants. He spent his childhood in Minnesota , Texas and for a short time in Denmark .

Anderson was studying physics and during this time began writing science fiction stories. His first science fiction story Tomorrow's Children , which he wrote with FN Waldrop , was published in Astounding in March 1947 . In 1952 he published his first novel, Vault of the Ages . Anderson was one of the first writers to publish both fantasy and science fiction novels and yet maintain a clear separation of genres.

After his marriage to Karen Kruse in 1952, Anderson moved to the vicinity of San Francisco, where he lived until the end of his life.

Anderson was one of the most prolific SF writers in the US , he published over 100 novels. From 1972 to 1973 he was president of the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America . Anderson's friends included science fiction writers Gordon R. Dickson and Clifford D. Simak . His daughter Astrid is the wife of science fiction writer Greg Bear . In 1994 Roland Emmerich produced a film adaptation of the novel The High Crusade under the title High Crusade - Frikassee im Weltraum .

Anderson died on July 31, 2001 in Orinda, California.
