Greg Bear (2005)

Gregory Dale Bear (born August 20, 1951 in San Diego , California ) is an American science fiction writer. He publishes under the author name Greg Bear and is the son-in-law of Poul Anderson .

His work is about galactic conflicts (in the Forge of God books), artificial universes (in the Thistledown series) and accelerated evolution (in the novels Blood Music , The Darwin Virus and The Darwin Children ).

While the extensive and detailed account of science in his work identifies him as the author of “hard” science fiction, the plausibility of some of his scientific ideas is occasionally questioned. For example, it was suggested that it was difficult to imagine that the bacteria in blood music could process enough information to become conscious . But it has also been theorized that although the bacteria individually process hardly any information, they could develop consciousness as colonies.

In Forge of God and The Anvil of the Stars , Bear offers a possible solution to the Fermi Paradox : Young planetary civilizations can only survive if they keep quiet and do not attract the attention of destructive probes . The first part, The Forge of God, deals with the destruction of the earth by a killer civilization and the salvation of the less chosen by friendly aliens. In The Anvil of the Stars , a spaceship with youthful survivors is sent out to fulfill the galactic law and destroy the killer civilization.

More recent works, such as the two stories The Darwin Virus and The Darwin Children, deal with the influence of a viral disease that causes evolutionary transitions, and adhere closely to current findings in the molecular biology of viruses and evolution. While some fairly speculative ideas are primarily entertaining (it's fiction , after all), they are introduced in such a drastic and disciplined way on the cutting edge of these disciplines that the Darwin Virus received praise in the science magazine Nature and the first German publications in the specialist book publisher Spektrum Academic publisher published.

One aspect that runs like a thread through many of Bears' novels is the societies in which his stories take place. As a matter of course, he embeds his plot in meticulously drawn unusual social structures from the start, which the reader only becomes aware of in the course of the novel and which often makes them plausible.

While most of Bear's work is science fiction, two of his early works, The Infinity Concerto and The Serpent Mage , are more categorized as fantasy literature.

criticism

  • Michael Nagula on blood music : “The particular importance of this novel by Bear, who before and after in his works no longer deviates significantly from a visionary technicalism of classic design, lies in its obvious ambivalence. Blood music is caught between the demands of a world in which man has yet to find his place and the idea that a return to a paradise, on which every philosophy of technology is based, will be forever denied ... The biochemist Ulam saves the world on behalf of science - but by destroying it. "
  • John Sladek about God's Forge : “The book only occasionally shows weaknesses, in those places where it ignores its cinematic premises and grows into 'scientific' ... One longs for a more naive mode of viewing, for someone who just becomes aware that the devil has simply been let go and everything breaks. However, the earth continues so smoothly towards its inevitable end, and the story slips smoothly on to a surprise ending. "
