Quincy Anton Promes (born January 4, 1992 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch football player of Surinamese descent.

The winger began his professional career in the Dutch Eredivisie , where he played for FC Twente Enschede and the Go Ahead Eagles Deventer . In August 2014 he joined the Russian first division club Spartak Moscow , where he was the league shooter king in the 2016/17 season and was one of the best players in the Russian league in his four years. He spent the 2018/19 season with FC Sevilla in Spain and since July 2019 he has been under contract with Ajax Amsterdam again in the Netherlands .

Promes has been the Dutch international since March 2014 .

Club career

Beginnings

Quincy Promes was in the Dutch capital Amsterdam , the son of Surinamese born parents and started playing football at the local RKSV DCG . His father played professional football in Suriname and later became an amateur in the Netherlands. In 2002 he joined the youth academy of Ajax Amsterdam , where he was released at the age of 16 due to his bad behavior. At that time he was already considering quitting football, but was persuaded by his mother to continue and moved to the youth department of HFC Haarlem . A year later he moved on to FC Twente Enschede , where he signed his first professional contract in February 2011.

FC Twente Enschede

First year as a professional

For the 2011/12 season Promes was ordered for the first time in the first team, as he was able to draw attention to himself with excellent performances in the reserve team. He made his debut in the Eredivisie on April 11, 2012 in a 2-2 draw against AZ Alkmaar , when he came on for Nils Röseler in the 81st minute . On May 3, 2012, he signed a new three-year contract with the club. His next playing minutes he collected in the lost playoffs for the UEFA Europa League against RKC Waalwijk , where he was substituted on in both games. In the 2011/12 season he played a total of these three games for Twente.

Loan to the Go Ahead Eagles

On July 31, 2012 Quincy Promes moved on loan for the entire 2012/13 season to the second division Go Ahead Eagles , where he should have collected match practice at a high level. He made his debut on August 10, 2012 (1st matchday) in the 2-0 away win against Almere City , when he came in the 70th minute of the game for Sjoerd Overgoor . On the 3rd matchday (August 24th) he was able to score his first league goal in a 4-1 away win against FC Oss and also prepared two more goals for his team. At the Go Ahead Eagles he acclimatized quickly, rose to become a regular in the attacking midfield and became a crowd favorite. He was nicknamed Promessi by fans of the Eagles and on November 2 (11th matchday) he scored a brace for the first time in a 6-1 away win against Excelsior Rotterdam . With 13 goals and nine assists in 32 league games, he contributed significantly to the good playing time of the club, which qualified for the playoffs for promotion. There he shot his team in a 3-0 home win against FC Dordrecht in the second leg of the first round with two goals in the semifinals, where they could defeat VVV-Venlo twice. In the final they defeated FC Volendam in two games and thus returned to the top Dutch league after almost 20 years.

Breakthrough in the Eredivisie

Back at FC Twente Enschede, Promes was a permanent member of the team from the start in the following 2013/14 season . His first two goals of the season came on August 18, 2013 (3rd matchday) in a 6-0 home win against FC Utrecht . Promes was first used in this season on the position of the right winger and developed there to the undisputed regular player. In November 2013 he scored five goals in four league games, but injured himself in a 2-1 away win against Roda JC Kerkrade on November 29, 2013, in the last game of the month, shortly after his winning goal in a collision with opposing goalkeeper Filip Kurto . The knee bruise he suffered forced him to watch for the remaining games of 2013. His outstanding performance in the first half of the season helped him to be considered one of the best players of the first half of the season. In the second half of the season he was fully operational again and he started in every league game. On March 20, 2014, he signed a new working paper, which should bind him to the association until summer 2017. Promes ended the season with eleven goals and eight assists, which he was able to collect in 31 league games and placed third with the club. Promes was then associated with various top European clubs.

Spartak Moscow

First years

Quincy Promes shortly after joining Spartak Moscow in August 2014

On August 8, 2014 Quincy Promes moved to the Russian first division club Spartak Moscow . A transfer fee of 11.5 million and additional bonus payments were negotiated. The Dutchman received jersey number 24 at his new club. He made his debut on August 14, 2014 in the 4-0 away defeat against FK Krasnodar . He quickly established himself in Russia and scored his first two goals of the season on September 14, 2014 (7th matchday) in a 3-1 home win against Torpedo Moscow . Under head coach Murat Yakin he formed a congenial partnership with the experienced Roman Schirokow and was named Player of the Month in November 2014 due to his good performance. Thanks to three goals and one template, he was given this honor in April. In his first season he scored 13 goals in 29 league games and prepared five more goals, making him the club's best scorer. Murat Yakin then called him the most important commitment of the season and Promes received the club's best player of the season award. He was also named in the list of the best 33 players of the season by the Russian Football Association .

During the summer break, Promes was brought into contact with various clubs by the media, but said he wanted to stay with Spartak himself. He scored his first two goals of the season in a 2-0 home win against Krylja Sowetow Samara on August 9, 2015 (4th matchday). Promes was often used as a center forward under the new head coach Dmitri Alenichev . On October 25 (13th matchday) he scored two goals in the derby against Dinamo Moscow , including the match winner in the 91st minute of the game. For the second half of the season he got jersey number 10 after the departure of Jura Mowsisjans and increased his goal scoring significantly. In 12 league games, he scored eight times and improved his goal account to a total of 18 hits in 30 league appearances, making him the second best league scorer behind Fyodor Smolow (20 goals). Promes was named Spartak's Player of the Season for the second time following the 2015/16 season.

Champion and top scorer

Quincy Promes after scoring a goal in the Champions League game against Sevilla FC in October 2017

Quincy Promes started with two goals and an assist in the 4: 0 win at home to Arsenal Tula in the season 2016/17 . In this summer transfer window, speculation increased again about Quincy Promes leaving Moscow. However, these were terminated abruptly at the end of August 2017 with his contract extension until summer 2021. Under the new trainer Massimo Carrera , he was to be found again more often on the wing, found himself with Spartak for the first time in the race for the championship but had to struggle with minor injury concerns even in the first half of the season. In the last league game of the year he scored a goal in a 2-1 home win against Rubin Kazan , but was sent off in the 76th minute with a “ yellow-red ”. In the spring of 2017 he contributed with important goals to valuable points and on May 6, 2017 (27th matchday) he shot his team to a 1-0 home win against Tom Tomsk , which brought the club to an early win of the championship. In total, he scored 12 goals in 26 league games this season and assisted nine more. He was named Player of the Year for his outstanding performance.

Persistent transfer rumors accompanied him again into the 2017/18 season , in which he made an excellent start. In the Russian Supercup he scored the interim 2-0 in the 113th minute of the game - the game ended with a 2-1 victory - against city rivals Lokomotiv Moscow and thus contributed to winning the trophy. Promes also scored regularly in the league championship and had already scored six goals after 10 games until a brief injury-related loss at the end of September 2017. Nevertheless, the start for the reigning champions was not the right one and it was not until October 2017 that the international ranks were reached. On October 17, 2017, he scored two goals and made two assists in a 5-1 home win against Sevilla FC in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League . However, this victory was Spartak's only one in the group stage, but they qualified with third place in the table for the intermediate round of the UEFA Europa League , where they lost to Athletic Bilbao in February 2018 . In December 2017 he won the title of Russia's Player of the Year in the weekly Futbol magazine's annual poll . In January 2017, it was reported that Spartak had turned down a £ 25million offer from English Premier League club Southampton FC because the club had failed to find a suitable replacement for Promes. Promes stayed with Spartak once more and on April 8, 2018 (25th matchday) he scored the first hat-trick of his career in a 4-1 away win against Anzhi Makhachkala . With these goals he became the club's most successful foreign goal scorer. In the last three league games he was allowed to lead the team as captain on the field for the first time and reached second place in the table with the club. At the end of the season he stood at 15 goals this season and became the league shooter king before Fyodor Smolow (14 hits). He was also named Player of the Year by the Internet portal Championat for the second time in a row .

Quincy Promes started the 2018/19 season on the left wing, scoring his first goal of the season on 8 August 2018 in a 3-2 away defeat by PAOK Thessaloniki in UEFA Champions League qualifying . After a 0-0 in the second leg Spartak was eliminated from the qualification. In his last appearance for Spartak on August 25, 2018 (5th matchday), he scored one more goal in a 2-1 derby win against Dinamo Moscow.

In his four years with the capital city club, Quincy Promes appeared in 135 competitive games, in which he scored 66 goals and half as many assists.

Stagnation at Sevilla FC

After Spartak failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, Quincy Promes moved to Spanish first division FC Sevilla on August 31, 2018 for a transfer fee of € 20 million , where he signed a contract until June 30, 2023. This made him the record departure of the Muscovites. On September 2, 2018, he made his debut in the 0-1 away defeat in Derbi sevillano against city rivals Betis Sevilla for his new club, when he came on for central defender Simon Kjær in 87 minutes . On October 25, 2018, he scored his first goal in a 6-0 home win against Akhisarspor in the UEFA Europa League . Promes did not make the final breakthrough in the starting line-up at the Nervionenses and he only managed his first league goal on January 26, 2019 (21st matchday) in a 5-0 home win against the UD Levante . In this game he also prepared two goals. He scored his third goal of the season on April 25, 2019 (34th matchday) in a 5-0 home win against Rayo Vallecano . He ended the 2018/19 season at Sevilla with three goals and nine assists, which he was able to achieve in 49 competitive appearances.

Return to the Netherlands

On June 24, 2019, Quincy Promes moved to Ajax Amsterdam for a transfer fee of 15.7 million euros , where he signed a five-year contract and returned to the Netherlands. On July 27, 2019, he made his debut in the 2-0 win against PSV Eindhoven in the game for the Johan Cruyff Cup for his new club when he came on for Hakim Ziyech in the 59th minute . He scored his first goal on September 1, 2019 (6th match day) in a 4-1 away win against Sparta Rotterdam . Promes found his shape again in his home country and on September 25, 2019 (catch-up game of the 4th match day) he scored three times in a 5-0 home win against Fortuna Sittard . He was also strong in the UEFA Champions League and scored against all three group opponents, Lille OSC , Valencia FC and Chelsea FC . Promes also caused an own goal in the 4-4 draw against Chelsea. Until the league was abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Quincy Promes had 16 goals and five assists in 28 competitive games.

National team

Quincy Promes was able to play for both the Netherlands and Suriname due to his Surinamese parents .

In March 2011 Promes played for the first time for the Dutch U19 national team and played a total of five internationals for the selection. Between September 2012 and March 2013, he played four test matches with the U20 , in which he scored a goal. He then played for the U21s until September 2014 , where he scored seven goals in 10 international matches.

In March 2014 Promes was nominated for the first time for the Dutch senior team. He made his debut on March 5, 2014 in a 2-0 defeat in a friendly against France when he was on the pitch over the full game distance. In May 2014 he was nominated by Louis van Gaal in the provisional 30-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , but did not make it into the final selection. He did not play his next assignment again until October 2014. Since summer 2015 he has been a permanent member of the Elftal squad . On October 7, 2016, he scored his first two international goals in a 4-1 home win against Belarus in the qualifier for the 2018 World Cup in Russia .

On November 19, 2018, he shortened the Nations League game against Germany with his goal in the 85th minute of the game to 1: 2. The score was later equalized by a goal from Virgil van Dijk in the 92nd minute of the game. In the semi-finals of the Nations League, where they met England , he scored the goal in the 114th minute of the game to make it 3-1.
