Gravestone of Quintus Petilius Secundus

Quintus Petilius Secundus was a Roman legionnaire . He was probably born in Milan around 40 AD and died in Bonn at the age of 25 .

resume

Quintus Petilius Secundus, son of Quintus Petilius, probably came from Milan and belonged to the voting district ( tribe ) Oufentina. Petilius was a soldier in the Legio XV Primigenia , which was actually based in Vetera near Xanten . Probably to carry out construction activities, he was posted to the Roman camp in Bonn. The XV Primigenia was stationed in its main camp Mogontiacum ( Mainz-Weisenau ) for almost four years . He died at the age of 25 after serving five years of service. His legacy had a tombstone made for Petilius based on the will.

Tombstone

The gravestone, which commemorates Quintus Petilius Secundus, was found in 1755 in the Electoral Palace , today's university , in Bonn. It can be seen in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum and - as a copy - in the "Roman Road" in the Rheinaue in Bonn.

The stele indicates the niche of a grave building. The semi-dome is set off from the substructure by a profile, the gussets above the niche arch decorated with squares bear an acanthus ornament .

Clothing and equipment

In the niche the deceased legionnaire stands in arms, but without armor, helmet and shield. Over the short tunic he wears a cloak ( paenula ) hanging low at the back . His equipment is limited to the characteristic throwing lance ( pilum ), the short sword ( gladius ) and the dagger ( pugio ). The two coupling ( cingulum militare ) are decorated with angular metal fittings. Four leather straps with metal pendants hang down in the middle of the upper belt.

The gesture of the left hand can be interpreted as reaching into the folds of the coat or as holding an object, for example a scroll .
