Róbert Švehla (born January 2, 1969 in Martin , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player who played during his active career between 1995 and 2003 in the National Hockey League for the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs .

Career

Club

Švehla began his career in the youth teams of ZŤS Martin , for whom he made his debut in the 1986/87 season in the second-rate 1st SNHL. In 1989 he moved to the first division of Czechoslovakia, the 1st division , to Dukla Trenčín . In the following three years he established himself in the league and won the Czechoslovak Championship with Dukla in 1992 . He also won the Zlatá hokejka , the highest award in Czechoslovak ice hockey.

During the NHL Entry Draft in 1992 , he was selected by the Calgary Flames in the fourth round in 78th place, but remained in Europe and from then on played for the Malmö IF in the Swedish top division, the Elitserien . With Malmö IF he won the Swedish Championship in the 1993/94 season and was the best defender of the Elitserien in terms of goals and scorer points. At the end of the following season he left Sweden and played five games in the National Hockey League for the Florida Panthers , who had acquired the NHL rights to Švehla in September 1994.

In the following eight years Švehla played exclusively for the Panthers in the NHL and reached with these in 1996 the final of the Stanley Cup , in which they were subject to the Colorado Avalanche . In the summer of 2002 he was given in exchange for Dmitri Yushkevich to the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he spent his last season as an active athlete. On September 4, 2003, he publicly resigned from competitive sports. In total, he completed 655 NHL regular season games, in which he reached 335 points scorer.

Since the end of his career, Švehla has continued to play ice hockey. At the 2005 World Cup he was the assistant coach of the Slovak national team. On January 14, 2009, Švehla was assistant coach at HC Dukla Trenčín . Since summer 2009 he has been the chairman of the youth club of HC Dukla Trenčín.

International

Švehla represented Czechoslovakia at the U18 European Championship in 1987, at the World Cup in 1992 and the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . After the dissolution of his country of birth, he played for Slovakia at the Winter Olympics in 1994 and the B-World Cup in 1995 , where he made it to the top division with the Slovak national team and was elected to the All-Star team .

Further appearances followed at the World Cup of Hockey 1996 , the Olympic Winter Games 1998 , the World Championship 1998 and the World Championship 2003 .
