Róbert Ragnar Spanó (born August 27, 1972 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic lawyer and judge at the European Court of Human Rights . He has been the 15th President of the ECHR since May 18, 2020.

Live and act

Róbert Ragnar Spanó obtained the title of Candidate in Law at the University of Iceland in 1997 , which corresponds to the combined acquisition of the titles Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws . He then worked as a judge at an Icelandic district court before becoming legal advisor to the ombudsman of the Icelandic parliament in 1998. In 2000, Róbert Ragnar Spanó obtained his Magister iuris degree in European and Comparative Law at the University of Oxford . From 2002 to 2004 he was Assistant Professor at the University of Iceland, later Associate Professor and since 2006 Full Professor of Criminal Procedure Law. After another brief job as a judge, he worked parallel to his work at the university in various positions for the Icelandic Ministry of Justice, the government and as chairman of two expert commissions on the investigation of sexual abuse of children and young people and human rights violations in welfare organizations.

From 2010 to 2013 he was Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Iceland. In 2012 he worked as an independent expert for the Lanzarote Commission . In June 2013 he was elected as the successor to Davíð Þór Björgvinsson as representative of Iceland as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights . Róbert Ragnar Spanó began his term of office, which is expected to last until 2022, on November 1, 2013. On April 1, 2019, Róbert Ragnar Spanó was elected by the judges of the ECHR as the new Vice-President of the Court of Justice. He took up office as one of the two ECHR Vice-Presidents, succeeding Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, who was elected ECHR President on May 5, 2019. He is also President of Section II of the ECHR. On April 20, 2020, the judges of the ECHR elected Róbert Ragnar Spanó as President of the Court. He took office as the successor to Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos on May 18, 2020.

In addition to Icelandic citizenship, Róbert Ragnar Spanó also has Italian citizenship.
