Rašid Mahalbašić (born November 7, 1990 in Jesenice , SFR Yugoslavia ) is an Austrian basketball player of Slovene - Bosniak descent. Mahalbašić is one of the few Austrian professionals next to Jakob Pöltl , Thomas Klepeiz , Benjamin Ortner , Thomas Schreiner and the native American Jason Detrick , who earn their money in the highest divisions abroad. Mahalbašić got a long-term contract with Fenerbahçe Ülker, a Turkish club team participating in the highest European competitions, but was initially loaned to other clubs. In 2012 this contract was terminated and Mahalbašić played for the Polish champions Asseco Prokom in the ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 and in the summer of 2013 for the Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League . After a successful 2013/14 season at ČEZ Nymburk in the Czech Republic , the Austrian international moved to the Kazakh club BK Astana . He later played in Russia, Spain and Germany, among others.

Career

Born in Jesenice near the border into a Bosniak family, Mahalbašić came to Austria with his family in 2002 after his father worked here. Just one year later he received Austrian citizenship , so that from then on he played in Austrian youth teams and was able to draw attention to himself there at the finals of Division B. In the 2006/07 season he made his debut for the Wörthersee Piraten from Klagenfurt in the top senior division of the ÖBL . Although he was not able to place himself in the front of the league with this team until 2010, as the most talented young player he already played in the men's national team at the European Championship of Division B in 2009 .

2010 Mahalbašić got a six-year contract with the Turkish top club Fenerbahçe Ülker from Istanbul . First he was then loaned to the league competitor in the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi Tofaş SK from Bursa for a month at the end of December 2010 .

After returning he was loaned to the former European Cup winner KK Split from Croatia , where he played until the end of the season. After a strong B-EM round in 2011, where he was able to achieve a " double-double " on average, he returned to Fenerbahçe again. His contract was terminated in early 2012.

Mahalbašić moved to the Slovenian club KK Zlatorog Laško in 2012 , for which he played individual games in the ABA league . While Zlatorog finished last in the ABA league after only two wins in 26 games, it was enough to make it into the play-off semi- final series in the national championship , in which the defending champion and former EuroChallenge winner KK Krka from Novo played mesto was defeated.

In the 2012/13 season Mahalbašić got a contract with the Polish series champion Asseco Prokom from Gdynia . In this team, which played in the ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 at the highest European club level, he was able to quickly secure a lot of playing time and game shares. After the upcoming exit of the main sponsor , the team did not act at the high level of previous years and, after being eliminated in the preliminary round of the European competition, could not defend the title in the national championship either.

In the summer of 2013 Mahalbašić was allowed to play in the NBA Summer League for the Utah Jazz , but could not recommend himself for a long-term contract there.

In the 2013/14 season he then played for the Czech series champion ČEZ Basketball Nymburk , with whom he is in use in addition to the national Národní basketbalová liga in the Eastern European VTB United League and in the 2013/14 Eurocup . With ČEZ he became champion and cup winner; he was also named MVP of the final series.

After his short but very successful time in the Czech Republic, he switched to the Kazakh champion BK Astana in summer 2014 . In the 2015/16 season he played in Russia for BK Nizhny Novgorod .

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season he first played for the Turkish first division club Yesilgiresun Belediye and moved to the Spanish league ACB to CDB Sevilla in December 2016 .

At the beginning of July 2017 he was signed by the German Bundesliga club EWE Baskets Oldenburg . In the 2018/19 season he scored the first triple-double in the league since 2010 in the game against Basketball Löwen Braunschweig . Shortly thereafter, he extended his contract to 2021. A little later, he was only the second player in Bundesliga history to achieve a second triple-double. Double. The opposing coach at the game against Würzburg was Denis Wucherer , of all people , who until then had been the sole record holder in this category. Just ten days later, on April 30, 2019, he was the first player in Bundesliga history to achieve double-digit values in three statistical categories (10 points and rebounds each and 11th rebounds) at the 117: 85 between the Baskets Oldenburg and the Gießen 46ers Assists).
