Revenge for Jesse James (original title: The Return of Frank James ) is an American western by the German - Austrian director Fritz Lang from 1940. It is the sequel to the 1939 film Jesse James, Man Without a Law . The cast is almost identical. Again took Henry Fonda the role of Frank James , this time as the main role.

action

Robert Ford, the murderer of Jesse James , and his brother Charlie are acquitted in a mock trial. When Jesse's brother Frank, who has retired to a farm, learns about it, he and his friends Clem and Pinky go looking for them to avenge his brother. He gets the money for this from a railway company, from whose cash register he uses. Frank escapes his pursuers, who accidentally shoot the head of the station. Incognito, Frank meets Eleanor Stone in Denver, who wrote about his death in her newspaper - the rumor was spread by Clem. This lulls the Fords into safety, but they have to flee again when Frank reveals himself and Charlie dies.

Black Pinkie has been charged with the headmaster's murder - to save him from the death sentence, Frank turns himself in. Eleanor Stone is on site as a reporter at the court hearing that has been scheduled. The trial ends with Frank's acquittal. Immediately he goes in pursuit of Bob Ford, who is mortally wounded and dies in another murder.

background

For Fritz Lang , best known for his silent films , Revenge for Jesse James was the color film debut and his first western . With the Ogalalla raid , he shot another western a year later.

Henry Fonda was the collaboration with Fritz Lang, for whom he in as early as 1937 chase , horror had stood before the camera and accused him on to take the actors lack of respect: "He was a master puppeteer, but without any feeling, and he could be very brutal. "

The film was first shown in Germany in 1952.

criticism

The lexicon of international film came to the conclusion that "Lang's first western [...] cleverly [plays] with the set pieces of the genre". The director was "less concerned with the external plot and historical facts" than "with the problem of the outlaws who can only assert their rights by force".

The French director Jean-Luc Godard later commented on the film:

“The staging is of a precision that borders on the abstract. When editing, intelligence outweighs sensitivity. […] If The Return of Frank James closes with a happy ending, in contrast to many of Lang's other films, it should not be seen as a concession to American censors. [...] If the shy individualist Frank James finds his happiness, then only after he has been morally compensated for his pain. "

German versions

The first German dubbed version was made in 1951. In 1972, the ARD commissioned a new dubbing from Berliner Synchron GmbH, which was realized under the dubbing direction and based on the dialogue book by Lothar Michael Schmitt . The film was dubbed again for ZDF in 1980 by Berliner Synchron GmbH under the direction of Lothar Michael Schmitt.
