Radoslav Svoboda (born December 18, 1957 in Brno , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and current coach . His son Petr Svoboda was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Radoslav Svoboda began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of TJ Ingstav Brno , for whom he was active from 1974 to 1977 in the 1st ČNHL , the second Czechoslovak division, and the 1st league . After a year at VTJ Písek in the 1st division, the defender played from 1978 to 1986 for their league rivals ASD Dukla Jihlava . With the army sports club from Jihlava he was Czechoslovakian champion four times in a row in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985 . For the 1986/87 season he returned to his hometown and played for TJ Zetor Brno in the first division. The 1987/88 season he spent at Esbjerg IK in the Danish Eliteserien . With the team he won the Danish championship title straight away . He himself was named the best defender of the elite series. In the 1988/89 season he was again under contract in Esbjerg. In the 1991/92 season he ran for the second team of EC Graz in the National League , the second highest Austrian ice hockey division. The Czech player last played for the national league player UEC Mödling from 1992 to 1994 , before ending his active career at the age of 36.

From 1999 to 2002 Svoboda worked as an assistant coach at his former club HC Dukla Jihlava from the second Czech division . For the 2002/03 season he took over the position of head coach at HC Žďár nad Sázavou from the third class 2nd národní hokejová league . During the 2003/04 season he was briefly active at his ex-club HC Kometa Brno as an assistant coach in the first division. From 2005 to 2007 he looked after the third division club HHK Velké Meziříčí as head coach. Then he was responsible for the third-rate HC ZUBR Přerov in the same position for a year . From 2008 to 2010 he was assistant coach at the second division club HC Rebel Havlíčkův Brod . In the 2010/11 season he was under contract as an assistant coach at HC Vrchlabí from the 1st division. At the end of the season, however, the club went into bankruptcy. For the 2011/12 season he therefore took on a job as head coach for third division club TJ Sršni Kutná Hora .

International

For Czechoslovakia Svoboda took part in the world championships in 1982 , 1983 and 1985 . He was also in his country's squad at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and at the Canada Cup in 1981 . At the World Championships in 1982 and 1983 and at the Olympic Winter Games in 1984, he and his team won the silver medal and the gold medal at the 1985 World Championships.

In 2020 Svoboda was inducted into the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .
