The Canada Cup 1981 ( French Coupe Canada 1981 ) was the second edition of the competition of the same name . It was held from September 1 to 13, 1981 in the Canadian cities of Ottawa , Edmonton , Montréal and Winnipeg . The tournament was again organized by Alan Eagleson . The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , the North American Professional League National Hockey League and the Canadian Ice Hockey Association Canadian Hockey Association supported the competition.

Six teams took part in the second edition of the competition. The USSR won the tournament by beating hosts and defending champions Canada 8-1 in the final . The best scorer of the tournament was the Canadian Wayne Gretzky with five goals and twelve points. The Russian Wladislaw Tretyak was voted Most Valuable Player .

The competition had to be rescheduled twice. After the IIHF had confirmed and approved the Canada Cup for 1979 and 1982 at its congress in 1978, the tournament had to be canceled in 1979. The reason for this was disputes between the Canadian Hockey Association and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association CAHA . In addition, General Motors, a potent sponsor, had dropped out in January 1979 . The second event was postponed to September 1980. However, the Soviet-Afghan War in December 1979 and the looming boycott at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow thwarted the organizers again.

mode

The six teams played the placements in the preliminary round in a single round, so that each team played five games. There were two points for a win, and one point each for a draw. The four teams with the highest points in the group of six qualified for the semi-finals.

The two semi-finals and the final were decided in the knockout system , the winners of the semi-finals moved into the final. In contrast to the event in 1976, the final was no longer played in the "best-of-three" mode.
