The 2016 World Cup of Hockey was a hockey tournament for national teams , which from September 17 to September 29, 2016 in the Air Canada Center in Canada's Toronto was held. After 1996 and 2004, this was the third edition of the competition of the same name . The official organizers were the North American professional league National Hockey League and the players union National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA).

The Canadian selection defended their 2004 title with a 2-0 win over Team Europe in a best-of-three final. In addition, she provided the top scorer and most valuable player of the tournament in Sidney Crosby .

Attendees

The field of participants consisted of the best six teams in the IIHF world rankings after the 2015 World Cup as well as two nationally mixed teams, Team Europe and Team North America . The European team was composed of European players, attended the nations without their own national team in the World Cup of Hockey. The North American team, in turn, consisted of players from Canada and the United States who were no longer than 23 years old as of October 1, 2016.

mode

The eight participants were divided into two groups of four teams each. In the group stage, each team played once against all other group participants and thus played three games. The respective group first and second qualified for the semi-finals, which was played as a knockout game . In the final, a kind of playoff series with a maximum of three games was played out, so that the team that recorded two wins first won the World Cup of Hockey.

The entire tournament took place according to the official rules of the National Hockey League (and not those of the IIHF ).

Squad

The final team roster was announced on May 27, 2016. The eight participating teams previously nominated their provisional squads on March 2, 2016, each with 16 players, which were then supplemented by seven more players in May. In total, each team had three goalkeepers, seven defenders and 13 attackers at their disposal, although additional nominations due to injuries were possible before the start of the tournament.

Preparatory phase

The eight teams started preparing for the tournament between September 4th and 5th, 2016. From September 8, the preparatory games began in the teams' respective training camps. A total of twelve test matches were scheduled in the period up to September 14th, so that each team played three games as part of the preparation.

With the exception of Team Europe , which, like Team North America, played its games in the French-Canadian metropolises of Québec City and Montréal , the four European teams first prepared in their home countries, where they each completed a test match and another in that of the respective opponent . They then traveled to Toronto via the east coast of the United States , where further test matches were scheduled in Washington, DC and Pittsburgh .
