Sidney Patrick Crosby , ONS (born August 7, 1987 in Cole Harbor , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian ice hockey striker who has played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of the center since 2005 . Even during his junior years, when he went on the ice for Rimouski Océanic in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), he was traded as " The Next One " because of his achievements . With the team he won the Coupe du Président , the championship of the LHJMQ, in the 2004/05 season , and received numerous individual awards from both the Québec Major Junior Hockey League and the Canadian Hockey League . In the 2005 NHL Entry Draft , Crosby was selected as the overall first by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

After he had scored over 100 scorer points for the Penguins in his debut season , Crosby ended the following season with a record of 120 points. For these achievements, the NHL awarded him the Art Ross Trophy as the best point player in the regular season and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the preliminary round. In May 2007, he became the youngest player in the history of the National Hockey League to be named team captain. In the 2008/09 season he won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh for the first time in his career and repeated this success in the 2015/16 season and the 2016/17 season . He was also honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2016 and 2017 as a playoff MVP . With the Canadian national team , Crosby took part in the 2006 Ice Hockey World Championship and finished the tournament as the best scorer. At the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics , he won the gold medal with the Canadian selection. In the 2009/10 season he scored over 50 goals during the regular season in the National Hockey League for the first time in his career and won the Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy as top scorer together with Steven Stamkos . After winning the gold medal at the 2015 World Cup , he was accepted into the Triple Gold Club . He is the only player who has won every title as captain.

Career

First steps (until 2003)

Sidney Crosby learned to skate at the age of three and enjoyed success in ice hockey at an early age. In the 2000/01 season he went for the Cole Harbor Red Wings, a team from Bantam AAA , on the ice and scored 182 points in 63 games. In five playoff games he scored another 16 points. At the age of 14 he led his team, the Dartmouth Subways, to the finals of the Canadian national championship and was recognized as the most valuable player and best scorer. The following year he attended Shattuck Mary's boarding school in the US state of Minnesota with whose ice hockey team he won the US championships. Through these successes, Crosby attracted attention early on.

Successes among the juniors (2003 to 2005)

In 2003, the Rimouski Océanic from the Canadian Junior League Québec Major Junior Hockey League secured the rights to Crosby when they selected him in the first place in the Midget Draft . In the same year he took part in the Canada Games with the ice hockey team of his home province, Team Nova Scotia . Crosby led the team as captain and was the best scorer of the tournament with nine goals and 16 points. The team finished the tournament in sixth place. During this time, Crosby was repeatedly compared to Wayne Gretzky, mainly because of his strikingly strong performances. As a rookie , he received the standard salary of $ 35 a week, but Rimouski Océanic is said to have paid him a one-time payment of $ 150,000 and an attendance clause in his contract. This was justified by the fact that one season earlier the audience interest had been comparatively unsatisfactory and not even half of the arena was filled with paying spectators. When Crosby played his first game in the LHJMQ in the Halifax Metro Center on October 16, 2003 , the stadium was filled with over 10,000 spectators and was well above the average attendance of around 6,000.

In his first game in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League, he scored three goals against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies . In November 2003 he went to the Subway Super Series (also Canada-Russia Challenge ), a friendly ice hockey tournament , for a Canadian team of the Canadian Hockey League on the ice, which met a Russian junior team. Crosby quickly became the star of the league and in the following months received several awards as player of the week and of the month, both from the LHJMQ and from its umbrella organization Canadian Hockey League. In his first season in 2003-04 , he scored 54 goals and 81 assists in 59 games. His 135 points as a rookie are the third highest in the history of the league. The LHJMQ and the CHL honored him as the best scorer, best rookie and best player of the year. Never before has a LHJMQ player won all three awards in his freshman year. Crosby was also named Personality of the Year for the Canadian Hockey League with the Paul Dumont Trophy .

In the summer of 2004, Crosby received a three-year offer for $ 7.5 million from Hamilton from the World Hockey Association 2, which was still being planned at the time . Crosby turned down the offer and the league ultimately never started playing. The attention of journalists and talent scouts increased significantly in the fall of 2004, as Crosby took first place in the ranking of the most talented young players for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft . Wayne Gretzky , who is considered the best NHL player to date, said he had confidence in Crosby to break his records. From then on, Crosby was repeatedly compared with the best ice hockey players, especially Gretzky and Mario Lemieux . Crosby met the high expectations, improved in the LHJMQ again compared to the previous year and scored 66 goals and 102 assists in 62 games of the regular season in the 2004/05 season . Together with his strike partner Dany Roussin and Marc-Antoine Pouliot , he formed the strongest attack formation in the league, which was instrumental in the successful performance of the Rimouski Océanic. In the playoffs he led Rimouski Océanic to win the championship and took part with the team in the Memorial Cup , where it lost to the London Knights in the final . As in the previous year, the LHJMQ and the CHL recognized him as the most valuable player and best scorer. He also received the trophy as a playoff MVP of the LHJMQ.

In September 2019, his shirt number 87 was permanently banned by the Rimouski Océanic. In the course of the 2020/21 season, the number 87 is to be blocked by the LHJMQ throughout the league.

Beginnings in the National Hockey League (2005 to 2006)

Crosby in the Pittsburgh Penguins jersey

Sidney Crosby was ranked first place most talented player for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft throughout the season . He was considered the most auspicious player since Mario Lemieux , who was elected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1984 and is considered one of the best ice hockey players of all time. The draft lottery , in which due to the failure of the 2004/05 season all teams had the chance of the first right to vote, was jokingly renamed the "Sidney Crosby Lottery" as it was considered certain that Crosby would be selected first. The Pittsburgh Penguins won the lottery and on July 30, 2005, as expected, voted the 17-year-old Canadian first in the NHL Entry Draft .

He made the direct jump into the NHL squad of the Penguins and played there alongside Mario Lemieux, who was also the owner of the franchise , but ended his career in January 2006 after he had been diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia a few weeks earlier . In his first game, Crosby contributed an assist. In October 2005, he was named NHL Rookie of the Month for the first and only time in his career . The first few months were unsuccessful for the team, so the coach was changed on December 15. The new coach Michel Therrien soon named Crosby as the alternate captain of the Penguins. The team did not succeed for the time being and the Penguins missed the playoffs. Sidney Crosby finished the 2005/06 season as the sixth best scorer in the NHL with 102 points, breaking the franchise record as a rookie with the most points that Lemieux had previously held. He was also the youngest player in NHL history to reach 100 scorer points.

After the end of the season he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team , a selection team of the best new professionals , put together by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association . Crosby was also nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best league newcomer of the year, but the trophy won Alexander Ovetschkin . Despite his good performances, Crosby also had to accept criticism, especially from opposing players and coaches, who criticized that Crosby would complain too often to the referees about decisions. In addition, only two Penguins players had received more penalty minutes than Crosby, who spent 110 minutes in the penalty box.

Successes with the Pittsburgh Penguins (since 2006)

Crosby in the jersey of the Canadian national team

In his second NHL season he continued his good performances and scored on October 28, 2006 his first hat trick in an 8-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers . Against the Flyers Crosby contributed one goal and five assists to the 8: 4 victory in December 2006, scored six points in a game for the first time and took the lead in the scorer standings. This again fueled comparisons between Crosby and Wayne Gretzky, who was the last teenager to top the NHL in points. In January 2007 he was nominated for an NHL All-Star Game for the first time after Crosby had received the most number of votes by a player in the entire league. A short time later he was elected to the starting line-up of the Eastern Conference , but in the game itself he remained without a scorer point. On March 2, 2007, he scored his 200th scorer point in the National Hockey League against the Carolina Hurricanes and, at the age of 19 years and 207 days, became the youngest player in the history of the league to reach this milestone.

Crosby defended the lead in the scorer ranking of the NHL until the end of the season and was the youngest winner of the Art Ross Trophy as the best scorer in the league with 120 points . He also led the Penguins for the first time since 2001 back into the playoffs, in which they failed in the first round to the Ottawa Senators . On May 31, 2007, Crosby was named the youngest team captain in NHL history. He held this record until September 2012, before he was replaced by Colorado Avalanche striker Gabriel Landeskog , who was eleven days younger when he was appointed team captain. At the presentation of the NHL Awards in June 2007, Crosby was the youngest player to date with the Lester B. Pearson Award for best player and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the league, the second youngest player after Gretzky. He was also elected to the NHL First All-Star Team , a selection team of the season's best players.

On July 10, 2007, Crosby extended his contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins early until 2013, which has brought him 8.7 million US dollars per season since 2008/09. On December 20, 2007, he posted his first Gordie Howe hat trick when he reached a goal, an assist and a fight, which is punished with at least five minutes, in the game against the Boston Bruins . In this game, his 194th in the NHL, Crosby fought with Boston defender Andrew Ference .

In the 2007/08 season , Crosby failed with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the final at the Detroit Red Wings with 2-4 wins. On January 1, 2008, he completed his first NHL Winter Classic , an outdoor ice hockey game, in the encounter against the Buffalo Sabers , which was played for the first time in the history of the league in the United States. This season he was nominated for the second time in his career for the NHL All-Star Game. A few days before the game, Crosby contracted an ankle sprain and missed the event. On March 4, 2008, he returned to the ice after his recovery. In the same year, Crosby was awarded the Order of Nova Scotia for his services to ice hockey .

In the 2008/09 season , Crosby reached the playoffs again with the Penguins. This season he was nominated for the third time in his career for the NHL All-Star Game. In the fan selection of the starting lineups, Crosby had reached a record with over 1.7 million votes. Due to a knee injury, he missed participation in the event for the second time in a row. On May 4, 2009, Crosby scored three goals in a playoff game for the first time in his career in the second game of the Conference semifinals against the Washington Capitals . After the Washington Capitals were defeated in seven encounters, the team prevailed one round later in four games against the Carolina Hurricanes and again reached the finals of the Stanley Cup . The Detroit Red Wings won the first two games in the series, in which Crosby set few accents and remained pointless. The Penguins won the following two encounters and equalized in the series to 2-2. After the Pittsburgh team had lost their fifth game at the Joe Louis Arena 5-0, the Penguins kept their chances for the title by winning their sixth game before winning their seventh game. In this game, Crosby injured his knee as he was checked in the second third by Johan Franzén along the gang. In the last third he came to a short stint before the game ended after regular time and the Pittsburgh team won the trophy. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman handed him the Stanley Cup at the end of the game, and Crosby became the league's youngest team captain to win the Stanley Cup at the age of 21.

Also in the following year, the Penguins with Crosby were among the title contenders. On April 8, 2010, he scored his 500th point in the National Hockey League in the last home game of the regular season at the Mellon Arena . At 22 years and 244 days of age, Crosby was the third youngest player in league history to reach this milestone. Only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux were younger. In the second playoff round he failed with the Penguins at the Montréal Canadiens . After the 2009/10 season , he won the Maurice Richard Trophy for the first time in his career as the top scorer of the regular season. Crosby finished the season with 51 goals and was tied with Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning , who also received the same trophy. In addition, Crosby was honored with the Mark Messier Leadership Award as a person with outstanding leadership skills.

During the 2010/11 season , Crosby managed from November 3, 2010 25 games in a row to achieve at least one scorer point before he remained pointless on December 29 in a 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders . During this time he scored 50 points scorer. On November 27, 2010, Crosby managed a hat trick in a game against the Calgary Flames and reached a personal milestone of 200 NHL goals. The last time the Swede Mats Sundin had a longer series was in the 1992/93 season , when he had scored at least one point in 30 NHL games in a row. Crosby was nominated as one of six players by a fan vote in January 2011 for the NHL All-Star Game. Since he was still feeling the aftereffects of a concussion he suffered at the beginning of 2011 at the NHL Winter Classic , he missed the event. The long-term effects of the concussion put him out of action until the end of the season, even in the playoffs Crosby was unable to intervene in the game, although he had returned to training on the ice in mid-March 2011. The striker finally made his comeback on November 21, 2011 in a home game against the New York Islanders, in which he scored two goals and two assists.

Nevertheless, the 2011/12 season was less successful for the striker, as in mid-December 2011 symptoms of a concussion reappeared in a collision with Boston Bruins striker David Krejčí . These let the attacker fail again for numerous games from the league. After missing 40 NHL games due to injury, Crosby returned on March 15, 2012 in the away game with the New York Rangers in the formation of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He ended the regular 2011/12 season with just 22 appearances, in which the center contributed eight goals and 29 assists. In addition, the Canadian reached the mark of 600 scorer points in the regular season during the season. He achieved this as the seventh youngest player in league history and as the youngest since 1994, when Pierre Turgeon achieved this milestone in the dress of the New York Islanders. In June 2012, Crosby signed a new twelve-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins that guaranteed him a total salary of $ 104.4 million during that period. The average annual salary is $ 8.7 million.

The 2012/13 season started late due to the lockout and with a reduced schedule on January 19, 2013. Crosby got off to a strong start in the season and was able to put himself at the top of the scorer list early on. He was able to further expand his lead over the course of the season. On March 30, he was hit in the face by a slap shot by his teammate Brooks Orpik at a home game . He lost several teeth and had to be operated on the same evening due to a broken jaw. This ended his regular season early and he finished 4th on the scorer list with 56 points (15 goals and 41 assists). Despite Crosby's injury, the Pittsburgh Penguins were able to finish their regular playing time successfully and started as the top-seeded team of the Eastern Conference in the playoffs. Crosby was able to join the team again at the beginning of the playoffs and so the first two series were won against the New York Islanders and the Ottawa Senators . In the conference final, the Pittsburgh Penguins clearly lost their series 0: 4 against the Boston Bruins , who had an outstanding goalkeeper in Tuukka Rask . Crosby didn't score a single point against the Bruins.

After Crosby had missed many games in the last three seasons due to various injuries and the lockout, he was able to play through the 2013/14 season almost completely. At the end of the regular season he had 104 points (36 goals and 68 assists) to book, which meant he was able to win the Art Ross Trophy as the best scorer in the league for the second time in his career . At the NHL Awards Crosby won the Hart Trophy for the second time as Most Valuable Player. In addition, after 2007 and 2013, he received his third Ted Lindsay Award for best player according to the players' union.

In the 2015-16 season , Crosby won the Stanley Cup for the second time with the Penguins. He was also awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs . In February 2017, the Canadian scored the 1000th scorer point in the NHL, making him the third player in franchise history after Lemieux and Jaromír Jágr to achieve this mark exclusively in the Penguins' jersey. Furthermore, Crosby reached this milestone in the 757th career game. Only eleven players in NHL history and no other player of his generation required fewer bets and reached 1000 points faster. At the end of the 2016/17 season , the Canadian not only defended the Stanley Cup with the Penguins and thus won it a third time, but also the Conn Smythe Trophy. This was last achieved by Mario Lemieux in 1991 and 1992. Crosby was also the third player in NHL history after Philadelphia's Bernie Parent (1974, 1975) and Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux (1991, 1992) who was named the most valuable player in the finals twice in a row.

On February 11, 2018, Crosby scored his 400th career goal in the regular season. He succeeded as the 95th player in NHL history. Of the active players, only Alexander Ovetschkin  (590),  Patrick Marleau (526), Marián Hossa (525),  Rick Nash (433) and Marián Gáborík (403) scored more goals.

In the course of the 2018/19 season, Crosby played his 916th game of the regular season in the Penguins jersey and has been the sole record player of his team since then. He overtook Mario Lemieux (915).

International

In August 2003, Crosby took part with the Canadian U18 national team in the Nations Cup , now known as the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament . Crosby finished the tournament with the team in fourth place. With six points in five games, he was the Canadian team's top scorer. During the 2003/04 season he took part for the first time in the Junior World Championship with the Canadian U20 team . The selection won the silver medal and Crosby became the second youngest player in the history of the U20 World Junior Championship to score. In January 2005 he won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships with the Canadian U20 national team . In December 2005, Crosby was not considered for inclusion in the squad of the Canadian national team for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . By this time he had scored as many points in 31 NHL games in the 2005/06 season and had previously been described by Gretzky as "tremendous for the game". Crosby was disappointed with this decision, but explained that he can understand the non-consideration, since Canada has numerous excellent ice hockey players and an "all-star team" could provide.

Crosby after winning the gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games

After the early retirement of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2005/06 season, Crosby took part with the Canadian national team in the 2006 Ice Hockey World Championship . In the role of assistant captain, he was one of the leading players and reached fourth place with the Canadian national team. With eight goals and eight assists he was the best scorer in the World Cup and the youngest player to ever succeed. He was also elected to the All-Star Team of the World Cup and was named the best striker of the tournament. Instead of running at the 2007 Ice Hockey World Cup for the Canadian national team, Crosby had to sit out due to a foot injury and thereby missed participation in the tournament. Team Canada won the gold medal without him by beating Finland in the final .

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games , Crosby, who ran up as assistant captain, scored the decisive goal in overtime for the 3-2 victory in the final against the USA and thus led Team Canada to Olympic gold. After failing in the playoffs, Crosby was appointed to the squad of the Canadian national team for the Ice Hockey World Championship held in Germany in May 2010 to replace the injured Ryan Smyth . He declined to participate in the tournament, however, as Crosby said he had played many encounters in the previous two years and needed rest.

For the 2014 Winter Olympics , Crosby was designated as the team captain of the Maple Leaves and should lead the Canadians to Olympic gold as the lead player. This was the first time in his career that the striker took part in the role of team captain, having previously played as an assistant twice (2006 World Cup and 2010 Olympics). Crosby became the third player in the history of the Pittsburgh Penguins after Mario Lemieux and Dave Tippett , who led Canada's Olympic team. After Crosby initially had five games at the tournament without scoring and had only scored two assists, the center scored a goal in the final against Sweden with a solo to make Canada 2-0. With an ultimately clear 3-0 win over Sweden, Canada managed to defend their title.

At the 2015 World Cup , he won the gold medal with the Canadian national team and thus became a member of the Triple Gold Club by winning Olympic gold and Stanley Cup . In September 2016, this success was followed by winning the gold medal at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .

Play style

Crosby plays on the position of the center and is widely regarded as one of the world's best players in his position. He describes his achievements as follows: “Mostly I'm just attacking and going to the net. It's just about competing hard. ”(Analogous translation:“ Most of the time I just attack and walk in the direction of the goal. It's all about working hard. ” ) He describes his style of play as “ aggressive in order to force the opponent to lose puck and creating opportunities. ” Steve Yzerman describes Crosby as a versatile player who scores his goals in different ways. Yzerman sees Crosby as a great role model for all young players. He also names his strength with the Bullys as valuable quality. He describes his qualities as follows: “He's always been a goal-scorer, but he's added a wrist shot coming down the wing, a one-time on the power play. He's just continually adding to it. ” (Analogous translation: “ He's always been a goalscorer, but now he's added a wrist shot when attacking over the wing and a one-timer (slap shot) in power play. He improves all the time . ” ) Pittsburgh's former head coach Dan Bylsma praises him as a “ hardworking player who tries to get better every season. ” Crosby has daily intensive shooting practice with assistant coach Tony Granato .

In September 2006, sports commentator Kelly Hrudey emphasized that Wayne Gretzky also had a reputation as a complainer at the beginning of his career and, over time, learned to control his temper. Hrudey attributed Crosby's outbursts to his inexperience and youth.

Personal

His father Troy Crosby played in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League on the position of ice hockey goalkeeper and went on the ice for the Junior de Verdun and Canadien junior de Verdun . In the 1984 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the twelfth round by the Montréal Canadiens . In contrast to his son, he subsequently did not pursue a career as a professional ice hockey player.

In May 2006 Sidney Crosby signed a three-year contract with advertising partners Pepsi -QTG Canada and Frito Lay Canada . Pepsi previously had corresponding contractual relationships with former ice hockey players Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky . In 2007, Crosby was nominated as one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People of the Year" nominees. However, it was not enough for inclusion in the Time 100 .

In May 2010, he bought a home in the Pittsburgh area. He had previously lived in a house with his former teammate Mario Lemieux and his family since the beginning of the 2005/06 season .

In May 2010, he signed an advertising contract with sporting goods manufacturer Reebok worth around ten million US dollars over seven years. Reebok also created an "SC87" clothing line. Crosby also has contracts with Bell Canada , Tim Hortons and Gatorade .

Around two weeks after the 2010 Winter Olympics, he donated the Olympic victory bonus to his foundation, the Sidney Crosby Foundation . The foundation was established in 2009 in Nova Scotia. She is committed to providing financial support to charities and providing financial support to local child protection organizations. In February 2011, the National Hockey League Players' Association Goals & Dreams, in conjunction with Crosby and his foundation, donated 87 sets of equipment to various minor league organizations in Nova Scotia to enable children in need to play ice hockey.

Well-known nicknames Crosby's include The Next One , based on Wayne Gretzky, and "Sid the Kid". During his junior years he scored eight points in a friendly game and was nicknamed Darryl (after Darryl Sittler ) by his teammates at the time , who wrote it on his gloves .
