Connor McDavid (born January 13, 1997 in Richmond Hill , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League since July 2015 . The center is unanimously considered the outstanding talent of its generation and was accordingly selected as the First Overall Draft Pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . In his first four seasons he won the Art Ross Trophy twice as the league's top scorer and was also honored with the Hart Memorial Trophy and twice with the Ted Lindsay Award as Most Valuable Player of the NHL. He has been the team captain of the Edmonton Oilers since October 2016, making him the youngest captain in NHL history. Furthermore, his eight-year contract, signed in July 2017, made him the highest-paid player in the league.

Career

childhood

Connor McDavid was born in Richmond Hill and grew up in Newmarket, about 30 kilometers away . His brother Cameron, who was two years older than him, also played ice hockey, but did not get beyond the lower class junior leagues. Connor McDavid started inline skating at the age of two, and one year later he was already skating. At the age of four he played organized ice hockey for the club for the first time, although he was actually a year too young, so that his parents gave his age at five when he registered. At the age of six, McDavid was "bored" with his domestic league, but he was not allowed to play in a higher age group in Newmarket, so his parents unceremoniously registered him in neighboring Aurora , where he was allowed to compete against opponents up to nine years old the league also dominated. He later played for the York Simcoe Express , with which he won four championships, with his father Brian serving as coach. In the next higher age group he joined the Toronto Marlboros , for which he scored 209 points in 88 games across all competitions in the 2011/12 season and was then named Player of the Year in the Greater Toronto Hockey League . Before his subsequent move to the Ontario Hockey League, McDavid also considered attending Boston University and thus participating in the National Collegiate Athletic Association 's game operations in the following years , but rejected this idea because he saw better development opportunities for himself in the OHL .

Erie Otters

In view of his previous achievements, he was awarded exceptional player status by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) , which allowed him to participate in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection at the age of 15 (instead of 16) . After John Tavares and Aaron Ekblad, he was only the third player in the history of the OHL with this exception. In the actual Priority Selection, he was selected in first overall position by the Erie Otters and received the Jack Ferguson Award for it . In the second game of the season for the Otters, McDavid started a series of 15 games in a row with at least one scorer point, so that he was honored as a rookie in October and November 2012. At the end of the season there were 66 points in 63 games for the Canadian, setting a new rookie team record for the Erie Otters, surpassing Tim Connolly (62 points; 1997/98 season). As a result, he was honored with the Emms Family Award as Rookie of the Year and elected to the OHL First All-Rookie Team .

In the 2013/14 season, McDavid increased his personal statistics significantly to 99 points in 56 games and thus led the Otters back into the playoffs, which they had missed the previous year. In the semifinals, however, the team failed with 1: 4 to the Guelph Storm . At the end of the season, the center was elected to the Second All-Star Team and received the Bobby Smith Trophy and the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award from the entire Canadian Hockey League , each honoring players who combine sporting and academic success. In addition, he was honored with the William Hanley Trophy as the fairest athletic player of the season.

With the start of the 2014/15 season, McDavid led the Otters as team captain . In total, he completed only 47 games in the season, because he broke a metacarpal bone in a fist fight in the game , and still reached 120 points scorer. In the subsequent playoffs, the Otters reached the final of the J. Ross Robertson Cup , but were defeated by the Oshawa Generals with 1: 4, although McDavid was the top scorer (21), assists (28) and scorer (49) of the playoffs. The attacker was then elected to the First All-Star Team , received the Red Tilson Trophy and the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as most valuable player from the regular season and playoffs and was honored again with the Bobby Smith Trophy and the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award . He was also named Player of the Year for the entire Canadian Hockey League and, as a result, the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award , which the most coveted player in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft will receive. Ultimately, he left the Otters as the player with the most individual accolades in the history of the Ontario Hockey League.

Edmonton Oilers

By the 2014/15 season at the latest, McDavid was seen as the outstanding talent of his generation and compared with stars like Sidney Crosby or Wayne Gretzky . In the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , as expected, he was selected in first position by the Edmonton Oilers , with Jack Eichel being a serious competitor in a particularly strong draft year for a long time, but in the end, as expected, was drafted in second place ( Buffalo Sabers ). In July 2015, McDavid signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Oilers, with $ 925,000 being the fixed maximum salary for an NHL rookie. According to media reports, performance-based bonus payments of a maximum of $ 2.85 million per year have also been agreed. In addition, a few weeks earlier, McDavid signed a new sponsorship deal with his outfitter CCM Hockey , which should bring him an additional million dollars a year, making him by far the highest-paid NHL rookie of all time.

In the first twelve games of the season, McDavid scored twelve points (five goals; seven assists) and was honored as the NHL rookie of the month for October. A few days later, in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers , he slipped into the gang after a duel at high speed and broke his left collarbone , which required an operation. He was out for almost three months and made his comeback in the 5-1 success of the Oilers over the Columbus Blue Jackets , in which the center contributed one goal and two assists. In February 2016, McDavid was involved in all five goals of his team in the 5-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs and thus scored five scorer points in a game for the first time, what his teammate Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had last achieved as a rookie in November 2011. In February 2016, McDavid had a total of 17 points scorer, led all rookies and was subsequently named Rookie of the Month for the second time. He did the same in the following month of March with 16 points, making him the second league newcomer after Teemu Selänne , who was named rookie of the month three times in one season. McDavid finished his first NHL season with 48 points in 45 games despite his injury in fourth place on the rookie scorer list. As a result, he was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team , but was defeated in the election for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the league, both the winner Artemi Panarin and the runner-up Shayne Gostisbehere .

As part of the preparation for the 2016/17 season, McDavid was introduced as the new team captain of the Oilers. He became the youngest captain in the history of the NHL, being 20 days younger than the previous record holder, Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche , at the time of the appointment. In the first month of the new season, the center scored twelve points in nine games, leading the league's scorer list and was named NHL Player of the Month for October. In January 2017, McDavid scored the 100th scorer point in his 92nd NHL game; among the active players only Alexander Ovetschkin (77), Sidney Crosby (80) and Yevgeny Malkin (89) were faster. A little later, he took part in the 2017 NHL All-Star Game , in which he led his Pacific Division as the captain chosen by the fans.

In his first full NHL season, McDavid reached exactly 100 scorer points (30 goals; 70 assists) and became the third youngest player in league history (Sidney Crosby 2006/07 and Wayne Gretzky 1980/81) to win the Art Ross Trophy was named the NHL's best scorer. A little later he was voted the most valuable player of the season by both journalists ( Hart Memorial Trophy ) and fellow players ( Ted Lindsay Award ) and was also appointed to the NHL First All-Star Team . McDavid then signed a new eight-year contract with the Oilers in July 2017, which began to take effect at the beginning of the 2018/19 season, when his entry-level contract had expired. The new contract has a total volume of $ 100 million, making the attacker the highest-paid player in the NHL with an annual salary of $ 12.5 million.

In the 2017/18 season, McDavid confirmed his achievements from the previous year and again won the Art Ross Trophy with 108 points, becoming the first player since Jaromír Jágr (2000 & 2001) to defend the trophy. At the same time he succeeded as the second youngest player ever after Wayne Gretzky. For the Oilers, however, the season was disappointing, so the team clearly missed the playoffs. McDavid also received his second Ted Lindsay Award at the 2018 NHL Awards . The following season 2018/19 turned out to be similar, so the team, which in the meantime dismissed coach and general manager, did not reach the playoffs again, while the Canadian achieved his best season statistic to date with 116 points. League-wide he only had to admit defeat to Nikita Kutscherow , who surpassed him with 128 points, while he increasingly appeared as an attacking duo with Leon Draisaitl , who placed fourth on the scorer list. In the end, McDavid was reassigned to the NHL First All-Star Team, but remained for the first time without an individual trophy.

In the 2019/20 season, which was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic , the Canadian achieved 97 points from 64 games for the first time, an average of over 1.5 per game. In the NHL's scorer statistics, he again placed second, this time behind his teammate Draisaitl. The Oilers subsequently took part in the qualifying round of the 2020 playoffs , but were eliminated from the Chicago Blackhawks (1-3) , although McDavid was the best scorer in the entire preliminary round .

International

McDavid after a game with the national team (2016)

At international level, McDavid made his debut at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2013 , where he finished sixth with Team Canada Ontario and scored nine points in five games. A few months later he was in the squad for the Canadian U18 national team at the 2013 Junior World Cup in Sochi . There, as the team's youngest player, he played a key role in winning the gold medal. He scored eight goals and six assists in seven games, making him the best scorer, goal scorer and assists of the tournament. In addition, the center was named the most valuable player and the best striker in the U18 World Cup. As part of the World Cup, Jim Nill , at that time working as a scout for the Detroit Red Wings , already drew the comparison between McDavid and Sidney Crosby , Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky and saw in him a possible Next One .

The U20 World Cup in 2014 went without any particular highlights for the Canadian; the Canadian selection took fourth place. At the U20 level, he only made his breakthrough in the national dress at the 2015 World Cup , when he was again top scorer (11 points; together with Sam Reinhart and Nic Petan ) and best assists (8 assists) and won the gold medal with the team in his own country .

In the men's field, McDavid made his debut at the 2016 World Cup , where he scored nine points in ten games for Team Canada and scored the decisive 1-0 in the final against Finland . With this gold medal, the Canadian became the youngest player to win the U18, U20 and senior world championships at the age of 19. In this respect Kaapo Kakko surpassed him in 2019. Before the start of the 2016/17 season, he also took part in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey with the North America team, a selection of U23 players from Canada and the USA . The attacker led the team as captain and came in three games on three scorer points, but retired with the selection in the group stage.

Style of play

All statistics in this section relate to the 2018/19 season, unless otherwise stated.

McDavid is unanimously counted among the best players in the NHL in technical categories such as puck handling, skating skills, and game overview. Its speed on the ice is considered to be an outstanding feature, so that comparisons with the "Russian Rocket" Pawel Bure were made. This enables him to regularly create offensive actions by simply crossing over from opposing players. In addition, no center in the league achieved more controlled zone entries than him in the 2017/18 season . At the same time, this speed leads to the fact that opponents are regularly tempted to take penalties by stopping, hooking or hindering. In the difference between the penalties caused by the opponent and the penalties he took himself, McDavid finished fourth in the league with a plus of 26. Although the Canadian is not counted among the best defensive centers in the league, he also managed to place himself among the top three players in the league with 99 takeaways (successful attempts to take the puck from the opponent),

With a height of 1.85 m close to the average, McDavid has a below average physique with 88 kg body weight (NHL average: approx. 91 kg). As a result, he is said to have weaknesses in physical play, for example when playing on the boards or fighting for positions in front of the goal. At the same time, this represents one of the biggest differences in the media-frequent comparison to Sidney Crosby , whose game is based more on physique and less on speed. In addition, McDavid is one of the weaker centers in the league in the face-off circle with only 46.6% won face-offs .
