Raffaele Sabato

Raffaele Sabato (born October 1, 1960 in Castellammare di Stabia ) is an Italian lawyer and judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Live and act

Sabato studied law at the University of Naples , where he graduated in 1983. In 1985 he was admitted to the Italian Bar Association. As part of a post-graduate study abroad he acquired in 1987 from the University of Texas at Austin the Master of Comparative Jurisprudence . In 1988 he graduated from Macerata University in Political Science and in 1991 obtained a degree in Commercial Law from the University of Naples. From 1991 Sabato worked as a judge at the Court of Justice of Naples. As such, he took part in several international cooperation projects and became a member in 2000, Vice-President in 2004 and finally President of the Advisory Council of European Judges (CCJE) in 2006. From 2012 to 2019 he was a member of the European Law Institute . In 2012 he became a judge at the Corte Suprema di Cassazione , the highest ordinary court in Italy. Since 2013 he has acted as a liaison between the Italian judges and the EU Commission.

In January 2019, Sabato was elected to succeed Guido Raimondi as representative of Italy as judge at the European Court of Human Rights . He took up his term of office, which is expected to last until 2028, on May 5, 2019.
