The Rahanweyn Resistance Army ( German  for "Rahanweyn Resistance Army" abbreviated RRA , as Rahanwayn Resistance Army or Reewin Resistance Army written) is an armed organization of the Somali - Clans of Rahanweyn and war party in the Somali civil war . It was founded in 1995 and is run by Hassan Mohammed Nur Shatigadud .

history

During the war in the early 1990s, the Rahanweyn were attacked and looted by other clans, which contributed significantly to the famine in their area . This traumatic experience led to a stronger political unification among the Rahanweyn.

After the Habar-Gedir- Hawiye Mohammed Farah Aidid conquered the city of Baidoa on September 17, 1995 and overturned the local Rahanweyn local administration, the Supreme Governing Council of Digil-Mirifle was held at a meeting ( shir ) in Jhaffey, west of Baidoa, on October 13 1995 decided to found the RRA. As a result, young Rahanweyn men and women were trained and armed to launch a counter-offensive against Aidid. The neighboring country Ethiopia supported this.

The RRA has since been active in the Rahanweyn area in southwest Somalia , mainly in the Bay and Bakool regions . In 1998 she ousted the militias from Xuddur, now led by Aidid's son Hussein Mohammed Farah , and also from Baidoa in 1999, and she continued to fight them in Shabeellaha Hoose until 2000 .

After the Somali interim government was formed in 2000, it initially fought against its attempts to gain control over Baidoa. In 2001, she joined the alliance SRRC led by Hussein Mohammed Farah against the transitional government. The RRA is striving to create a state of its own for the Rahanweyn and in 2002 proclaimed independence in Southwest Somalia with Hassan Mohammed Nur Shatigadud as president, which, however, was not recognized by any state. Meanwhile, the RRA, like Aidid, has joined the interim government in which Shatigadud was appointed finance minister.
