Bakool ( Arabic باكول Bākaul ) is a region ( gobolka ) in southern Somalia . Their capital is Huddur . The region was created in 1974 whenthe administrative structure of Somalia was changedunder Siad Barre , from a part of the former region of Upper Jubba.

Bakool is located inland in the area between the two great rivers of Somalia, the Jubba and the Shabeelle , and borders the Somali region of Ethiopia in the north . Localities are u. a. Tiyeeglow , Wajid and Yeed .

The most important livelihoods are the cultivation of sorghum in combination with livestock farming ( agropastoralism ) and - especially in the northern part of the region - nomadic cattle breeding.

The most important Somali - communities in Bakool are the Rahanweyn .

Its Rahanweyn resistance army , which is allied with the transitional federal government , is a significant political force . In 2009, the region was fiercely contested between forces loyal to the government and the radical Islamist al-Shabaab .
