Togdheer ( Arabic توغدير Tūghdayr ) is a region ( gobolka ) of Somalia .
Togdheer is located in northern Somalia and borders the Somali region of Ethiopia in the south . Since 1991 it has been part of the de facto independent Somaliland , the eastern third of the region has also been claimed by the autonomous region of Puntland since 2002 .
In 2007, millennia-old cave paintings were discovered in Dhambalin , Jilib Rihin and Haadh . In buuhoodle middle of the 19th century Sufi sheikh, poet and uprising leader Mohammed Abdullah Hassan born.
geography
The capital of the region is Burao , other larger towns are Buhoodle , Oodweyne and Sheekh . The region is divided into four districts. It is named after the Togdheer river, which flows through the season .
population
The inhabitants of the region are Somali . Most belong to the Isaaq clan ; Members of the Dhulbahante, a subclan of the Harti- Darod, live in the eastern part of the Buhoodle region . The most important livelihood is nomadic cattle breeding, which is repeatedly affected by periods of drought.
politics
Since the north-western part of Somalia - the former British Somaliland - declared independence as Somaliland in 1991 , Togdheer has been part of Somaliland. The eastern part of the region has also been claimed by Puntland since 2002 , which declared itself an autonomous region within Somalia in 1998.
The region has 15 of 82 seats in the Somaliland Parliament. In the local elections in 2002 , the ruling party UDUB received the most votes with 27.52%, followed by Kulmiye with 26.24% and SAHAN (Somalilean Alliance for Islamic Democracy) with 22.87%; SAHAN achieved its best result in Togdheer, but was only the fourth strongest party in the whole of Somaliland and was thus not one of the three parties allowed for future elections. In the 2003 presidential election , Ahmed Mohammed Mahamoud Silanyo of Kulmiye received 55.19% of the vote. In the 2005 parliamentary elections 39.1% of the votes went to Kulmiye, 32.5% to UDUB and 28.4% to UCID , which means that the parliamentary seats of Togdheer were occupied by 6 Kulmiye, 5 by UDUB and 4 by UCID.
