Ralph Eichler

Ralph Eichler (born December 31, 1947 in Guildford , Surrey , England ) is a Swiss physicist . From 2007 to January 2015 he was President of ETH Zurich .

Life

Eichler attended grammar school on Münsterplatz in Basel and then studied physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich . In 1976 he was working measurement of the 3d5 / 2-2p3 / 2 transition in myonischem silicon with a crystal spectrometer at the former Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research PhD . After a stay as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University in the United States , he worked from 1979 as a research assistant at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg . In 1982 Eichler accepted a position as a research assistant at the Institute for Medium Energy Physics at ETH Zurich, where he completed his habilitation in 1986.

1989 Eichler was as an associate professor and in 1993 as professor of physics at ETH Zurich appointed . In 1988 he turned down an offer for a C4 professorship at Heidelberg University . Eichler has been participating in the international H1 collaboration at DESY since 1992 and was its scientific director from 1995 to 1997. From 1998–2002 Eichler was Deputy Director of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), a research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland, and head of its research area “Particles and Matter”.

In September 2001, the Swiss Federal Councilor elected Ralph Eichler as director of the PSI to succeed Meinrad K. Eberle, who resigned on July 1, 2002 . In May 2007, the ETH Board asked the Federal Council to elect Eichler as President of ETH Zurich after Martin E. Schwab, who was favored by the election preparation committee, surprisingly withdrew his candidacy. Eichler has been a member of the ETH Board since January 2004 and, in his role as director of PSI, was also one of the twelve members of the election preparation committee.

Eichler was elected ETH President on May 30, 2007 and succeeded Ernst Hafen, who resigned in November 2006 . After leaving ETH Zurich at the end of 2014, Lino Guzzella was President of ETH Zurich from 2015 to 2018 .
