Raphael Wicky (born April 26, 1977 in Leuggern , French spelling also Raphaël Wicky) is a former Swiss football player and today's coach . The defensive midfielder could also be used in defense and left midfield.

He is currently head coach of the MLS - Franchises Chicago Fire .

Career

As a player

At the age of 16, Wicky made his debut in the Swiss national league A wearing the jersey of the traditional Valais club FC Sion . A year later he received his first invitation to the national team . In 1997 he signed a contract with the German club Werder Bremen . There he was under contract until the end of 2000, before moving to Atlético Madrid in the Spanish Segunda División . In December 2001 he returned to the German Bundesliga and played for Hamburger SV for a total of 5 years .

In the summer of 2007 he moved to his home club FC Sion , and in January 2008 he signed with CD Chivas USA in the United States . At the beginning of 2009, Wicky resigned from professional football.

Before he became the coach of the first team at FC Basel in the summer of 2017, Raphael Wicky appeared regularly on Swiss television . Together with Marco Streller and Alain Sutter , he formed the team of experts for football broadcasts for the UEFA Champions League, World Cups and European Championships.

Success as a player

Wicky won the Swiss championship in 1997 with FC Sion and was three times cup winner . In 1999 he won the DFB Cup with SV Werder Bremen . A great success in his career was qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , although he had played very few qualifying games (reasons were injuries and yellow card suspensions). Against the Faroe Islands , he scored his only goal in the Swiss jersey.

As a trainer

From 2013 to summer 2016, Wicky was the coach of the U18 team at FC Basel , and since July 1, 2016 coach of the U21. On April 21, 2017, it was announced that he would be the head coach of the first team at FC Basel from the 2017/18 season , having acquired the UEFA coaching diploma required for this role in autumn 2016. After a poor start to the 2018/19 season , he was released on July 26, 2018.

On March 8, 2019, the American Football Association appointed Wicky national coach for the U17s . At the 2019 World Cup , the team under him was eliminated in the group stage.

For the season 2020 the Swiss was hired as head coach of the MLS - Franchises Chicago Fire .
