Gerstetter studied graphic design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and later worked in advertising in London , Haifa and Berlin . From 1979 to 2002 he worked for Bundesdruckerei . As chief designer, he designed official graphic design, postage stamps and banknotes (for Israel , Bolivia and Peru, among others ). In 1987 Gerstetter's design was selected as the basis for the fourth and final series of Deutsche Mark banknotes, which were in circulation from 1990 to early 2002. A short time later, he also won the design competition of the Banco de España , which issued four banknote denominations from 1992 based on Gerstetter's designs. Although the designs he submitted for the first series of euro banknotes were not selected by the jury for implementation, he was commissioned to revise the second series of euro banknotes , which came into circulation from May 2013. According to Gerstetter, he made the notes more colorful to make them look friendlier, the steel engraving elements got more depth, the guilloches are more prominent, and the reference to Europe in Greek mythology was established.

His daughter Avitall is Germany's first female Jewish cantor .
