Avitall Gerstetter (born May 11, 1972 in Berlin ) is the first female Jewish cantor in Germany.

Life and accomplishments

Avitall Gerstetter grew up in a traditional Jewish family in West Berlin . Her father is the banknotes - designer Reinhold Gerstetter . Her mother, the music and bat mitzvah teacher Chava Gerstetter, introduced her to music. After graduating from high school, Gerstetter majored in singing with Rudolf Riemer, as well as piano, clarinet and dance at the Berlin University of the Arts . She studied English as a second subject at the Technical University of Berlin . Her special singing talent as a soprano was noticed early on, which she demonstrated in the choir of the Jewish community of the Pestalozzistraße synagogue . She was encouraged by Chief Cantor Estrongo Nachama to become a cantor. In 2001, Gerstetter completed her training as a cantor in New York and since then has held office regularly in the Oranienburger Strasse and Hüttenweg synagogues , although there were initially reservations about a female cantor in Orthodox circles in the Berlin community.

Social Commitment

In order to bring people of different religions together, Avitall Gerstetter organized an interdenominational football tournament for the first time in 2005 in collaboration with haGalil . She called the tournament the Avitallscup . At the second event in June 2006, an atheist, Christian, Jewish and Muslim team each played. These were supported by celebrities such as Petra Pau and Ulla Meinecke , while Hans-Christian Ströbele acted as referee .

Together with Konstantin Wecker , Gerstetter recorded a charity CD in 2005 in favor of haGalil .

Concerts

She gave and continues to give numerous concerts in Germany, England, Italy and the USA . Their program includes classical music , songs in Yiddish and synagogue music.

In the run-up to a concert in Trier in September 2006 , there was a scandal when the manager of the cloth factory initially withdrew her room promise in view of the events of the Lebanon War . After protests by the Jewish community, the rejection was withdrawn.
