Cloth factory in Trier

The cloth factory (TUFA for short) in Trier is a regional cultural center and cabaret in the former Weber cloth factory at Wechselstrasse 4-6. The TUFA is an important part of the cultural life in Trier.

The carrier Tufa eV is the umbrella organization of 29 individual associations from the entire spectrum of culture. The individual associations design the program in consultation with their statutes. Tufa eV supplements the program with its own events, mainly in the field of cabaret. Thanks to this collaboration, the topics of the events, courses and workshops on offer are diverse. Around 70,000 visitors are counted annually. The Tufa eV is a member of the umbrella organization LAG Soziokultur & Kulturpädagogik Rheinland-Pfalz.

History and buildings

In the Kulturwerkstatt association, groups, bands , ensembles and individual artists who had neither rehearsal rooms nor exhibition and performance halls came together. The city of Trier saw the need to create a cultural center for this independent scene. This planning was supported by the preparations for the 2000 year celebration of the city of Trier in 1984. The centrally located but ailing building of the former Weber cloth factory proved to be suitable. At a cost of around 500,000 DM, the first floor and the first floor were prepared. This made it possible to hold two large exhibitions and events. The association has signed a usage agreement with the city of Trier as the owner of the property and the buildings. Cloth factory was founded on November 7, 1985.

The goals when the cloth factory was founded were:

  • a culture and communication center for everyone
  • an enrichment and addition to the cultural life of the city
  • an alternative to existing established cultural providers
  • the promotion of neglected art forms
  • Opportunities to work and perform and a meeting point for young groups in the fields of music, theater , dance , literature , and the visual arts
  • offering courses and workshops in the fields of theater, ballet , pantomime , yoga , music, literature, and the visual arts
  • Children's and youth events and active artistic work in cooperation with schools, associations
  • open and flexible to all living forms of culture
  • Non-partisanship

In August 2006, the cultural center hit the headlines nationwide when the director wanted to cancel an event with the Jewish cantor Avitall Gerstetter on the grounds that the performance was inappropriate given the conflict in Lebanon . The unloading was reversed after a short, public discussion.
