Review for four

Revue zu Fieren was Klaus Mann's second play, which premiered on April 21, 1927 in the Old Theater in Leipzig . It is a comedy in three acts, published in 1926 by Oesterheld, Berlin.

For the premiere

The play describes the endeavors of four young people to collect and shape all the intellectual currents of their generation in a “colossal review”. Klaus Mann had written it as a touring piece for himself, his sister Erika , Pamela Wedekind and Gustaf Gründgens - the quartet made up of Anja and Esther -: “Two happy young couples, so to speak; because Fräulein Wedekind and I were still engaged, while Erika had meanwhile become Ms. Gründgens ”( Der Wendpunkt , p. 232/233). Gründgens also directed, the set came from the friend Dorothea Sternheim (called "Mopsa"), a daughter of the playwright Carl Sternheim . Klaus Pringsheim , Katia Mann's twin brother, contributed the music .

effect

Without Gründgens, who feared for his reputation and only played in Hamburg and Berlin, the troupe went on tour, from Cottbus to Copenhagen, but the performances turned into a “battle with the audience” (ibid.). The reviews were bad, but "the poet children" hit the headlines and played to crowded houses. Herbert Jhering criticized the play as a “children's theater” and said that the author was “embarrassing, gossipy and smoothly devouring current catchphrases”.
