Meerbusch-LangstDüsseldorf-Kaiserswerth

The Rhine ferry Langst – Kaiserswerth is a car ferry connection across the Rhine at Rhine kilometer 755, north of Düsseldorf . The ferry runs between the left bank location Langst-Kierst (to Meerbusch ) and the right bank Kaiserswerth (Dusseldorf to).

history

A regular ferry across the Rhine near Kaiserswerth has probably existed since the Middle Ages, when Kaiserswerth was still a royal or imperial seat and one of the most important cities along the Lower Rhine. The city had checkpoints on both banks to monitor shipping traffic on the Rhine and to collect customs.

Originally, the ferries were simple shells , small oar barges . These transported people and various goods, e.g. B. Lime from the Bergisches Land as an important building material or, in the opposite direction, fruit and vegetables from the Lower Rhine. Also towing horses that pulled the ships from the bank up the Rhine were transferred here.

From 1825 gierponte were used. But since it happened again and again that ships got stuck on the yaw rope and this disrupted the journey, the company finally switched to free-moving motor ships with diesel engines in the 1950s .

In the late 1960s, the ferry service was taken over by the Schäfer family business, which is now in its second generation.

The construction of the airport bridge, which is only 3 km upstream, in 2001/2002 represented a significant turning point for the Langst – Kaiserswerth ferry . Before that, the ferry was an important shortcut for many commuters; with the opening of the bridge, the volume of traffic decreased significantly. Today, significantly fewer employees and students from Kaiserswerth grammar schools regularly use the ferry on weekdays. The majority of the passengers make up tourists and day trippers; accordingly, the ferry is very busy, especially on Sundays and public holidays when the weather is nice.

Operating times

The ferry runs - except during the breaks (see below) - on working days from 7 a.m., on Sundays and public holidays from 9 a.m. until 7 or 8 p.m. The ferry shuttles as needed.

Every year in July, during the Düsseldorf Rheinkirmes , the Michaela II ferry, together with the Maria-Franziska passenger ferry, is used for a week as a “fairground ferry” between Düsseldorf's old town and the fairground in the Oberkassel district on the left bank of the Rhine . The ferry service between Langst and Kaiserswerth will be paused during this time.

In winter, from just before Christmas to the beginning of February, the ferry stops operating. Floods or ice also occasionally disrupt operations in the winter months.

The ferry currently in use is the Michaela II , in operation since 1993. It is a typical river car ferry with a shallow draft, designed as an open double-ended ferry . There is space for up to 17 cars on the open deck and up to 250 people. The ship has two main engines and a reserve engine with a total output of 516 hp.

In winter 2012/2013 the engines of the ferry were overhauled and upgraded.
