Rian Craig Johnson (born December 17, 1973 in Silver Spring , Maryland ) is an American film director , screenwriter , producer and film editor .

Life

Rian Johnson, born in Maryland, grew up in San Clemente , California , and graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1996 . He financed his feature film debut Brick with $ 450,000 borrowed from friends and family. Due to the low budget, he shot the film in his hometown of San Clemente and chose the school he attended in his youth as the central point of the film. Although his screenplay for Brick was rejected by the studios as too unconventional for a debut, the final film received a lot of positive feedback and won the Special Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival . Rian Johnson also wrote his own for The Brothers Bloom second film as a director, the script. Between 2010 and 2013, Johnson directed three episodes of the television series Breaking Bad , beginning with The Fly and ending with the critically acclaimed episode Ozymandias . With his third feature film, the 2011 action film Looper with Bruce Willis , he was able to work on a large budget for the first time. In 2012 and 2013, Johnson directed two more episodes of Breaking Bad , episode 51 and Ozymandias . Johnson received a DGA Award from the Directors Guild of America for directing episode 51 .

Johnson directed and scripted the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi . Filming under his direction began in mid-February 2016 and ended in July 2016. As in his other film projects, Johnson also works with cameraman Steve Yedlin on this production . Johnson previously made a cameo in the offshoot of the Star Wars series Rogue One .

On November 10, 2017, Disney announced that Johnson would be responsible for a new Star Wars trilogy.

His film Knives Out was released in September 2019 in US cinemas. The film was a huge hit with both critics and audiences, grossing over $ 300 million worldwide. The main roles were Daniel Craig , Ana de Armas and Chris Evans . Johnson received his first Oscar nomination for the script for the film .

Johnson has been married to film critic Karina Longworth since 2018. Johnson also has an older brother. His cousin Nathan Johnson is a musician and record producer, so he wrote the score for several of his films.
