Quote

Richard Germer 1950:

" Actually, I'm a trained businessman. I started with sugar. But by the way I was an enthusiastic hiker . When I was twenty, I won first prize at the first youth conference in Heidelberg, and from then on the store ran all by itself. Everywhere where in Hamburg was going on, at club parties, company parties, company outings, people wanted me. I came to the radio station in 1925. It was love at first sight, and we stayed true to each other, the radio and I. I always have my greatest successes with my Hamburg songs . They are Low German and High German songs that I have made known throughout Germany over the years. Many of them I set to music based on the poems of our home authors such as Gorch Fock , Rudolf Kinau , Heinrich Deiters , Otto Franz Grund , Hermann Löns and Hans Leip . Lately I've also been doing cabaret, but my real love is folksong . It's my great grief that the folk song, which used to be received with enthusiasm on every festive occasion, is now treated so much as a stepchild. And so I hope that with my work I can help my beloved stepchild to regain its proper place. "
