Rick Stafford (born April 19, 1972 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) is a German basketball coach. Born in the United States and of the Mormon faith, he himself played in the German basketball league for almost ten years before he became a coach. He has had German citizenship since 2000 , as his grandmother came from Germany.

Life

As a Mormon, Stafford completed his two-year missionary work in Saxony , during which he learned the German language. To study Stafford went to Anchorage in Alaska , where the German national player Hansi Gnad had already played with the Seawolves in NCAA Division II. At the Seawolves, he is listed in the top ten for assists and number of doubles .

In 1997 he came back to Germany as a professional basketball player in the 2nd basketball league for TV Langen. After two years he moved to the first Bundesliga and played for Brandt Hagen for a year. Then he played again in Hessen , this time for two years in Giessen. He then had his most successful time as a player in Bamberg, where he was able to become German champion after two runner-up championships in 2005 under coach Dirk Bauermann . Bamberg, with players like Chris Ensminger , Steffen Hamann and Stafford, was notorious and feared for their tough and uncompromising defense.

After his playing career, he became a trainer for the Bamberg farm team in Breitengüßbach, which was then playing in the Second League South. In February 2007 he had to go back to the field himself because of his team's injury problems. In the following season he only worked as Bauermann's assistant at the first division club in Bamberg. After the departure of Bauermann in Bamberg after the 2007/08 season, however, Chris Fleming from the league competitor Artland Dragons was committed . Therefore Stafford left Franconia and became a coach in Ludwigsburg. When the play-off dreams failed there and the expectations of the club and coach were not fulfilled, he was dismissed one match day before the end of the 2009 season. He returned to the United States and started teaching English.

Others

His brother Isaac (* 1981) also played in Breitengüßbach from 2007 to 2009. At that time, however, Rick was no longer the club's head coach.

He has eight children with his wife Maren. Her son Ricky, who also plays basketball, fell ill with leukemia in 2014.
