The film is about hobbyists who build steam locomotives to scale. Most of them belong to the Southern California branch of the Live Steam Model Locomotives Club. The replica models are powerful and function perfectly when traveling on the elaborately created rail system. Many of the models are perfectly working replicas of the locomotives that actually run on the rails of the United States.

Walt Disney , one of the experts in recreating such locomotives, familiarizes children with, among other things, his elaborately built model of the old "Central Pacific Diamond Stacker", which is part of his system on his estate in Beverly Hills .
