Rimas Kurtinaitis (born May 15, 1960 in Kaunas ) is a Lithuanian basketball coach and former basketball player. He played successfully for Žalgiris Kaunas , CSKA Moscow and Real Madrid , as well as in the Soviet and from 1991 in the Lithuanian national team . He belongs to the successful generation of Lithuanian basketball players around Arvydas Sabonis . As one of the best wingers of his time, the 1.96 m tall Kurtinaitis was known both as a player and as Europe's best three-point shooter. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , he was Olympic champion with the team of the Soviet Union . Four years later he won the bronze medal in Barcelona , this time with the Lithuanian team. He went to Australia in 1993 and played for the Townsville Suns , but moved to Real Madrid the following year . In 2003 he became national coach in Azerbaijan .
At the beginning of 2008, Rimas Kurtinaitis was one of a group of 105 basketball players who were nominated by the Euroleague basketball and / or basketball enthusiasts to determine fifty important figures in basketball in Europe , active from 1958 to 2008 and subsequently in Madrid in May 2008 ( Spain ). All the nominated players played a particularly prominent role in the European Cup competitions of FIBA Europe and the Euroleague basketball and were each among the particularly prominent 'stars' of their national league teams.
From 1997 to 2001 he was director of the Department of Physical Culture and Sports at the Government of the Republic of Lithuania (KKSD).
